Northern Minnesota in the Late 1800's

This set of stories are set in Northern Minnesota which I enjoyed as a Minnesota native. I don't think the author did enough research on the climate of Northern Minnesota; a couple of the stories included winter time settings. Weather in that latitude would have temps of 20° to 25° Farenheit with snow-covered ground that would preclude camping on the ground and be very hard to travel by coach in the late 1800's. I set that aside for this review and only took off 1 star from my rating.

Not my thing I'm afraid

My opinion is based on the first 2 books.

I liked that the main characters in the first book played a small part in the second one.
And I can imagine this continuing in book 3 and 4.
I think it’s nice that these books can be listened to as stand-alone novels, but if you listen to them in order, it’s extra rewarding.

I liked the storytelling part of the narration, but I liked the dialog parts less.
The dialog didn’t feel genuine/ natural, and I don’t know if it’s just the narration or the writing too. I think it’s a bit of both.
Because I didn’t fully believe/ could go along with the dialog in these stories, I was less engaged.

This is my first mail order bride experience, and I’m afraid it’s not really my thing.
But it has it’s charm, and it’s great 4 books are gathered in 1 collection. I always love that.

Between 2 chapters in the second book, there is an author’s note, asking listeners to leave a review. (and explaining how to leave a review and how much it’s appreciated, both multiple times)
I thought this was a very strange place for such a request. It pulled me completely out of the story.
I hope I won’t encounter such a thing again, and honestly it felt a bit disrespectful towards the story and the listener.

In the chapter list, you can see where the new books begin. That’s a big plus, not all omnibuses/ collections have that, and it makes it so much more easy to navigate chapters/ find a specific chapter or story.

I got this Audio Book for free (thanks!). I'm voluntarily leaving this review.
Opinions and ratings are my own and not influenced by how I got the Audio Book.
