About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Discover the explosive new Luke Carlton spy thriller from the Sunday Times bestseller and BBC security correspondent.

The world is on high alert.

Across the strait from Taiwan, China’s armed forces appear to be readying for war. Could the People’s Republic be preparing to invade its island neighbour?

A mole deep within the Chinese Communist Party leadership has some explosive intel that could defuse this geo-political timebomb. But before Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service can get hold of the data, the ‘collector’ sent to recover it is abducted.

As global tensions rise, MI6 operatives Luke Carlton and Jenny Li are dispatched to find the missing agent and the precious information she carries.

With the clock ticking and tip-offs taking them to shady Macau casinos, tawdry night clubs and down multiple dead ends, Luke is convinced they are being deliberately strung along.

Then they get the vital lead they need. It points to Taiwan – a country frantically preparing for imminent invasion. And it’s there that Luke and Jenny uncover what is really going on. . .

Drawing on his years of experience reporting on global security stories and in-depth knowledge of the security services, Frank Gardner has written his most frighteningly real, unnerving and explosive thriller yet.

I enjoyed the narration of this compelling story. The portrayal of the characters was good and the story moved rapidly and coherently.

A gripping story and potentially a real scenario in our currently unstable world.

Fast moving, exciting, plausible, wonderful piece of escapism. Shall be listening to more Frank Gardners books.

Terrific read

Frank Gardner is a great correspondent with excellent insight into world politics and operational tactics. I’ve read all of his fictional books and they are great. Unfortunately his skills as a narrator are not quite great. The story was up to the minute on world politics and technology but it was told without any great inflections. I think one of the previous narrators might have been a better choice. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the book, although (spoiler alert! ) I felt the ending was a bit rushed. Still, it does leave a big hole for another sequel to fill and I’ll be glad when it does.

Very current story

I enjoy the writers books immensely and the plot to this one is excellent. However, if there is a second follow-up book then I say, great. If not then the ending to this book is at best, incomplete. I do very much hope that there is a follow up that rounds off the story in a more complete fashion.

Brilliant book - BUT - the ending?

The story is fine but the narration is terrible. The author reads this like he is giving a brief to a BBC Anchor. I have the utmost respect for his talents and journalistic skills and indeed I relish hearing his take on world affairs. Sadly however, he is not a narrator of audio books. Hopefully his previous narrator will return for the next book.

Good book, ruined by narration.

Well narrated and a wonderful experience to listen and try and forecast the outcome keeps you thinking

The twist and turns

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

An interesting idea completely let down by lightweight plot, almost laughably bad scenes and above all a stilted and distracting delivery by the author.

Lightweight plot & poor delivery

Loved the technical side to the story, shows the write knows his stuff but too many chapters and loose ends. Feels like the ending ran out of paper. Narrater is mono tone, needs a pro narrater to really make the book come alive

Lacking content

Felt the story was a tad pedestrian and the ending was poor. The story was setting up some great ideas but just did not deliver.

Interesting but flawed

The story line was gripping and will definitely be looking for something similar to read
