Summary

Introduction to Sailing is veteran sailor Christian Williams’ candid and highly entertaining invitation to boats and the sea. Writing for new sailors of every kind, he evokes the joy of wind and water in an intimate style that begins with dinghies, which he advocates as most fun of all, and continues through cruising boats small and large and for every budget.

His invitation to join him on a tiny sunfish is itself a short course in how to sail any boat, and from there he leads us on a hands-on practical tour of daysailers, pocket cruisers, and the offshore sailboats of dreams, all informed by his own experience in dinghy and offshore racing, long-distance cruising, and survival in gales and storm. After 30,000 miles at sea Williams’ enthusiasm is contagious, and his more than 10 million views on YouTube have made him a social influencer.

Conceived as an audiobook, this extended personal conversation is an invaluable course in how to get started sailing, what boat to buy and how to pay for it, and the value of forever directing our imagination beyond the horizon ahead.

Excellent

This book is a very easy going, humorous explanation of sailing for beginners. I sailed as a child for a few weeks and loved it, and now in my late twenties I want to start sailing again. This is the perfect way to re-familiarise with the terms and sparks inspiration and excitement about getting out to sail again!

Mono-dialogue

Part autobiography, but mainly enjoyable ramblings on sailing, and how to do it.Makes one almost feel like in a dialogue.Highly recommended for people interested in sailing.

This is the real WHY for starting to sail.

Christian Williams is a living legend in the Philosophy of Sailing. With this Audiobook he shows you what type of boat is right for you and what each boat can and can not do. If you are an experienced sailor you will see many different perspectives and he will bring you back to your own decision making about which boat is right. If you are not ready to buy your first boat still listen to it. It will help you tremendously. I just came back from a sailing trip, bought the audiobook and was driving around in the countryside listening 3 hours in a row, sitting down for a coffee and thought I need to write this review. Thank you Sir! Harry

Interested in sailing?

Great approach to an "Introduction". Learning to sail and about boats, like most anything, requires that we get busy doing. There are many approaches to the doing process, which this Introduction to Sailing covers in a unique way. Christian's books and videos are entertaining and informative. This introduction worked for me because he covers the big picture experience from size of sail boats to casual vs. competitive sailing for the novice to the team or solo sailing in a variety of weather conditions. Helps to know he has been there done that. I was fortunate growing up to have a father whose hobby was navigation and sailing. He started small and eventually partnered on a 30' Grampian before moving to a 34'. Many, many interesting stories/experiences including a final family sail excursion to the BVI's before us kids ... moved on. I personally would not be interested in owning a sail boat, but am definitely interested in crewing, which I did after graduating college. Thinking of doing this again on the eave of retirement. What better way to get fresh air, travel, meet new people, have new adventures and learn new lessons ... from mother nature.

This guy has a great knack for storytelling and narration. If you’re looking to become a sailor, or just want to learn more about sailing, this is a great audiobook. He has other books as well and some really cool YouTube videos. Thank you for putting this all together Captain. I’ve learned a lot from you sir!

Excellent

A great sailor, story teller and teacher. Your passion for sailing is contagious. I am in my fifties and I had already chartered a couple of cruisers in the Mediterranean in the past couple of years, with a skipper, in order to gradually get into sailing as a lifestyle. Your Audi book was an inspiration, to take action towards sailing education and certification, and moving slowly towards my ambition; to spend more time on boats, cruising the globe. Thank you Christian, your book was a powerful visualization of what it feels like to be a sailor.

Delightful

Mr. Williams did a great job at writing this book. Very delightful. However, he has a very distracting habit of trailing off every sentence.

Really enjoyable introduction to sailing!

As someone who is just getting into sailing but has more windshield time than time to actually sit down and read a physical book, this was really helpful and well worth my time (and money). It really painted a picture what it is like when you first go sailing on a variety of different size boats and also included some enjoyable stories. The narration was very well done. If there was ever a follow-up book that provided more in-depth information, I would certainly purchase it. As it is, I'm really glad that Christian took the time to write and narrate this book.

This was a fun book

But I do have a bone to pick. The book only downloaded 13 complete chapters and perhaps a dozen sentences of the 14th chapter and I couldn’t listen to the rest of the book.

Now I will have to drive seventeen miles to town in hopes I can find this book at the library.

Disappointed

An inspirational read

Having sailed for 41 years, this book reflected my love for sailing. Christian is an inspiration for those of us getting older and wondering how much longer we can sail, as not a day goes by when I don't sail in my mind.
