About this listen
Deception. Death. A deal with the devil.
When Dr. Nathan Frost, a lecturer in German literature at Oxford University, is invited to a lavish party at the country house of a wealthy businessman, he knows there'll be a price to pay. After all, as an expert on the legend of Faust and Mephistopheles, he can recognize a deal with the devil easily enough. But even he's not expecting such a sinister end to the evening.
Called to investigate a suspicious death at a country house, Detective Inspector Bridget Hart is surprised to find a government minister among the party guests. Her team must navigate powerful interests to find the truth. But in a world of favors, backhanders, and corruption, nothing is as it seems and nobody can be trusted.

Plenty of Both
Another deftly-handled murder mystery set in Oxford. This time the University setting was more tangential, and I thought much more could have been made of the Faust motif. Again, beautifully read by Esther Wane.

Good tale
I like the characters although I was getting really fed up with Ffion and Jake’s misunderstanding!
Good ending.

Good story
Getting to know the characters more, better development than the first. Story was entertaining easy to listen to whilst running!

Excellent narrator but a bit clumsily written
I should say I am a former student of Wadham (the college featured in this book) so I enjoyed the descriptions and, as always, the authors describe Oxford very well. Esther Wane is also an excellent narrator and part of the reason I listen to these books rather than read them.
However this book had a really rushed ending and quite a few things that seemed to me (even as a non police person) overlooked for the sake of the story.

Unfortunate pronunciations of location names
Given that the authors know Oxford so well, were they to listen to the narration I am sure they would be disappointed by the repeated mispronounced location names in this series. Prominent examples are: Wytham Wood, Holywell St, St Giles and Frideswide Square,
Are Audible's narrators not advised to use google which has easily searched pronunciation guides? Do the authors not provide notes for the narrators?

Great plot, narration amongst the worst I’ve heard
I was a bit sceptical at first, but the main characters and some of the sidekicks grew on me. The plot is very well put together. But the narration…. It’s disastrous. Does the narrator have the faintest clue where the Fens are? Why is the entire Fen constabulary populated by Yorkshiremen and -women? With the exception of the obligatory tech-friendly cop who is an Essex girl. And the Chief Super who is posh. And even the Yorkshire slips over into Scots and Tyneside randomly. I’ll try one more but I’m not sure I can bear Henrietta’s total cluelessness about voice and accent.
