Domestic homicide is a pandemic so pervasive that the soaring figures cause weary resignation rather than alarm. For 30 years, Professor Jane Monckton-Smith has been fighting to change this. A former police officer and internationally renowned professor of public protection, she lectures on sexualised and fatal violence; works with families bereaved through homicide; and trains police and other professionals on how to best handle cases involving coercive control, domestic abuse and stalking.

Her groundbreaking research led to the creation of the eight-stage homicide timeline, laying out identifiable stages in which coercive relationships can escalate to murder and revolutionising our understanding of them.

In this book, Monckton-Smith shares a glimpse into a world of toxic masculinity and coercive control, one in which the tools are shame and fear, helped along by a media and justice system who are far from shedding sexist notions of men and women's roles in society.
Drawing on disciplines including psychology, sociology and law, she talks to victims, their families and killers, putting together pieces to the puzzle of how these relationships can end in murder and bringing to light the reasons why - for so many of us - there is no such thing as the safety of one's own home.

Important, clear...and sad
This non-fiction works exceptionally well for audio. It moves through the eight-stage model of coersive control in a way that is easy to follow and understand. There are lots examples from the author's extensive work and network, so it is in no way dry or overly theoretical. After listening I am filled with anger and empathy, but also with insight and clarity.

Must read! Don’t delay!
Everyone should read this book. It should be taught in schools before the partner search starts. It’s a game changer and potential life saver.
Jane Monckton-Smith shines a bright light not only on the patterns of coercive control and predictable stages of partner homicide and femicide, but also on how society, culture, systems, institutions and language perpetuate these. Bravely and accurately she challenges myths and questioned the status quo of love and relationships.
By describing her research and her techniques of observing, listening, noticing and analysing in her interviews with convicted murderers who killers their partners, she also provides a model for how to protect oneself and spot the signs of coercive control at the eight stages of her timeline model.
I cannot recommend strongly enough!

A compelling examination of Domestic Abuse
This ought to be mandatory reading for every practitioner in the criminal justice system. Professor Jane Monkton Smith isnt simply an academic it's very clear that she has a deep understanding of the system and its flaws. I have given a copy of this book to my daughter to read.

Heartbreaking but educational
Really recommend this book for education or pleasure purposes. I learnt so much more about DA even though some of it I already knew and experienced my self. This book should be made an essential read to courses such as social work or law degree even for police officers.

A book everyone should read
A very well evidenced and compelling book on coercive controlling behaviour that has a plethora of examples of what constitutes this behaviour and the very serious and often fatal consequences.
A book everyone should read - the more community intolerance there is of these behaviours the faster we can eradicate them.
