Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Checking into a psychiatric institution wasn't exactly on Ruby Wax's agenda for 2022 - writing about it wasn't either, but here we are. These days, trying to stay sane in a completely chaotic world makes life incredibly difficult, especially if you're struggling with your mental health. While searching for inner peace and equanimity amidst global chaos, Ruby realises that, ultimately, the most challenging gauntlet we all must face is ourselves.

I'm Not as Well as I Thought I Was is Ruby's most honest and raw book to date - an insight into the depths of her psyche, and a stark exploration of what trauma can do to someone. Reflecting on years of personal and professional experience, she opens up to listeners about her struggles with mental health and different treatments over the years, hoping to provide reassurance and guidance to anyone confronting their own anticipated, or unanticipated, struggles with mental health.

Critic reviews

Not only will this book make you feel less alone, it also might just change your life (Scarlett Curtis)
An exceptional account on mental health from a true tour de force. We're all a little messed up in our own ways, but we should all strive to be as fabulously fearless as Ruby (Fearne Cotton)
If you buy only one book this year, make it this one. Brilliant, heartbreakingly funny and painful: I couldn't put it down (Joanna Lumley)

A thoughtful listen

Raw, funny but sad at times. This is a refreshing story of someone who has battled mental health problems and sought answers. I could listen to Ruby talk about anything, her take on things is open and honest.

Honest and true

An amazing insight from into the mind and the potential to heal oneself from past influences. Nobody is without flaws but learning to accept them and find self compassion is where you find your true self. Blessings to you Ruby for your honesty and strength thanks for sharing.

Well I learnt a lot from this book. Some funny things and some sad things but Ruby is so captive and I love her so much.

A triumph of trauma.

Ruby writes with searing honesty, candour, humour and eventual reflectiveness from the dark edges of depression. The journey to there and finding a way back with self compassion and a raw, hard won understanding of trauma. Her descriptive style and humour make this difficult topic relatable and keep you invested. Snippets of knowledge about trauma and it’s power in every day life so useful and eloquently explained in the retelling of her own therapy and journey back from the edge. Thank you Ruby, these are the stories we need to hear to give hope and understanding.
