Soooo Good

I loved this book and didn't want it to end! listened to it over two days and was gutted when it ended. like other reviews mentioned it is very well researched and despite being a big Friends fan from when it first came out there was plenty of information I didn't already know. I was 18 when it fir st aired and 28 when it ended, these were very important years in my life and Friends was always there in the background so I totally get how nostalgic and comforting the show is to my generation and also understand it was a product of its time and can be considered offensive to minorities etc. This book covers all of that and then some. Go ahead and give it a listen 😊

The one with the 4 star review

As someone who is new to the tv show "Friends" I wanted to get some more insight in to why this show is so beloved and was so popular with the older kids at my school. It came just a little before my time and I really wanted something that would help fill in the blanks on what I missed out on. This listen did not dissapoint and made some incredible connections between the show and life in a sobering and poignant way I don't normally here. There were moments that were uplifting and heartfelt just like the show in question and I would definitely recommend this to any Friends fan out there.

Thorough and revealing

Nostalgic and yet new information to me too. Time spent with Friends is always worthwhile.

The Trivia

A Trivia book with some good tid bits. But it's more of an essay on the shows lack of diversity and "homophobia". I find this hypocritical as the show also makes fun of Italians and French, but the author doesn't make a peep about that or James Michael Taylor. It's just a show. This book pales when compared to the one written in the same way about the Big Bang Theory. This book is ultimately just a good winge about something that is clearly a product of its time. Like Rising Damp, Open All Hours or Only Fools & Horses. If you like it, watch it. If you don't like it, don't watch it. It needn't be any simpler.

Fantastic!

Thoroughly researched and carefully-curated piece of journalism, as both a history of Friends and an exploration of the network television landscape and wider culture before and during the show's run. I appreciated the author's judiciousness in giving each main actor a chapter while limiting themselves to only what affected into their life as an actor, avoiding the trap of overlong biographies or reheating tabloid scandals. The narration is strong, nicely evoking the cadence of certain actors without doing impersonations.

The only let down for me was the fact it totally overlooked Gunther!

Ignore some reviews who complain about the book being "woke". The author confronts problematic elements of the series using a wide variety of sources when evaluating the way in which these issues were received at the time, how they're viewed now and how they fit into their historical context. It's a nuanced, sensitive approach, not just "thing bad actually" as other reviewers seem to believe.

If you LOVE friends, this book isn't for you.

The author of this book spends its entirety looking for modern woke issue to pull apart a show made in a different time, for people more interested in comedy than virtue signaling wokeness.

So disappointed!

I was really looking forward to this after listening to the 4 minute preview..to be honest I think the 4 minutes was probably the best bit.

There was far too much analysing on certain subjects, plus, far too much talking about other shows, in fact, I kept fast forwarding it, hoping to hear something interesting…I’m only glad that I got it with one of my (wasted now) free credits.
If you’re a true friends fan, then seriously, don’t bother.
