About this listen

Hidden behind the walls of power, the corrupt and materialistic businesses, and the convenient death of every inconvenient whistle-blower, hides a secret organisation called the Wrecking Crew. For years they have been manipulating businesses and empowering governments. They don’t care what they do or how they do it, as long as the price is right - but this time they have gone too far. Now one man is on a mission to stop them. Eric Stone is trustworthy, easygoing and friendly - he’s your all-around nice guy. His first rule in life was always “Don’t get involved,” but when he discovers the shocking truth behind his friend’s death, he feels compelled to act. Stone is no stranger to risk, but the Wrecking Crew is the most dangerous adversary anyone has ever faced. Soon he and his friends are dragged into a desperate race for survival, where no one can be trusted. Can Eric Stone destroy the Wrecking Crew, or will he become their next victim?

Engaging thriller that keeps you hooked

Nick Albert is an incredibly versatile writer. I checked this book out after reading his memoirs. It's a very different book, but equally engaging. I was immediately drawn into the story and loved the way The Wrecking Crew were described, they were so well-imagined and sinister. The book reminded me a bit of Killing Eve, with the cat and mouse between the good and bad guys and the dark themes of organised crime. Albert has an incredibly vivid imagination and the book was well-written and researched. I also really enjoyed the narration by Andy Stevenson, which made the story very lively and engaging. Highly recommend!

Gripping thriller

This book is sensational, and as an author myself I don’t use this word lightly! A most unusual plot with twists and turns that intrigue and surprise leading to an explosive and unexpected (but immensely satisfying) ending. I was extremely impressed with the author’s in-depth knowledge of so many skills, from martial arts to computers, and even the intricacies of picking a lock. Terrific book and extremely well narrated by the talented Andy Stevenson. A resounding 5* review from me.

New venture, new triumph for Nick Albert

Nick Albert has shown his skill and versatility here, by moving on to the thriller genre having had deserved success with his humorous memoir series ‘Fresh Eggs and Dog Beds’. And this is another triumph for him.

The leading character is Eric Stone, a usually unassuming professional martial arts teacher, who goes on a revenge mission following the death of his best friend, aspiring MP Charles Rathbone. Stone, along with his willing associates, private detective Ed Carter, the mysterious and beautiful Linda Smart and the larger-than-life Megan Smith, finds that he is playing with fire – possibly literally – and is risking his life and the lives of his friends in his determination to expose those responsible for Charles’s death.

The pace accelerates, the characters throughout are well-crafted and the ending is surprising and intriguing. Stone’s combat skills come in handy as he takes on the bad guys and comes within an inch of, not just losing his life, but also his moral compass.

Andy Stevenson’s narration is flawless, with each character clearly defined and consistently delivered, making this a highly entertaining listen.

It’s set up beautifully for a Book 2 in the series which I eagerly await!
