Summary

Former Top Gear Stig Ben Collins shares expert skills and wisdom refined over a 20-year career as one of the best drivers in the world - from Le Mans Series racing to NASCAR, piloting the Batmobile and dodging bullets with James Bond.

Ben's philosophy of anticipation, smoothness and speed, honed over thousands of hours of elite-level performance, is really about economy of motion - which also gives you greater control, safety and fuel efficiency. How to Drive is about driving better, not faster.

Whether you've been behind the wheel for the best part of 30 years or you bought your first L-plate 10 seconds ago, this is the stuff your instructor missed, your dad forgot and your mates pretend to know...but don't.

Satisfactory but leaves the user wanting

Needs videos really for the more technical information, but otherwise adequate. I learned to be patient on the clutch when changing gears for smooth rolling

Would make a great TV series

Although I learned a lot from this book on how to improve my driving, I couldn't help but think the format would be better suited to a TV series rather than an audio/physical book, as some elements are naturally hard to grasp without seeing what's going on! The behind the scenes stuff on his stunt driving fascinated me as a fan of that sort of thing, thought it suffered a bit from everything having to be described.
I'm glad I listened to it though as it has definitely made me consider my driving more, I just can't help think there's more that could be gained from it if it weren't just a book!

A good book but not what I expected

I didn’t realise this was a book that actually tells you how to drive! Although there are some interesting bits and a few good anecdotes. Some bits are a little patronising and it sounds like it was recorded on a potato. That said I still kind-of enjoyed it.

Excellent advice and a few good yarns to boot

Ben's advice is aimed at day to day driving and for driving near your limits and Ben's credentials cannot be doubted. The book is full of sensible advice and recounts a number of Ben's very entertaining exploits. It is a book that inspires you to want to drive more smoothly and safely. I really enjoyed listening to Ben's narration too, he comes across as smart and has some great one-liners.

difficult to imagine

I enjoyed it overall but some of the non driving and racing skills where difficult to imagine. Understanding the car and why it does what it does makes you appreciate the mechanism of the car. It does help with different driving conditions and the snow was useful as it is a rarety these days. I must admit the best book I read is Road craft from the Police in all good book shops.

Much wisdom and experience

Seems a bit dated now in many respects, particularly in an age of electric cars and autopilot, not to mention certain tells such as ‘driving like a lady’. The basics are all good, solid advice and mostly still currently applicable but i think an updated edition is due (with less of the Top Gear macho swagger and more about Teslas, average speed limits and ULEZ zones…)

Fun and informative.

Great mix of fun anecdotes and fantastic insights into what we should all know about the cars we drive. Basically “the stuff you were never taught when you learned to drive, the stuff your mates pretend to know but don’t....” Definitely made me a better driver (speed has nothing to do with it. )
