About this listen

Nona Grey’s story reaches its shattering conclusion in the third instalment of Book of the Ancestor.

THEY CAME AGAINST HER AS A CHILD. NOW THEY FACE THE WOMAN.

The ice is advancing, the Corridor narrowing, and the empire is under siege from the Scithrowl in the east and the Durns in the west. Everywhere, the emperor’s armies are in retreat.

Nona faces the final challenges that must be overcome if she is to become a full sister in the order of her choice. But it seems unlikely that Nona and her friends will have time to earn a nun’s habit before war is on their doorstep.

Even a warrior like Nona cannot hope to turn the tide of war.
The shiphearts offer strength that she might use to protect those she loves, but it’s a power that corrupts. A final battle is coming in which she will be torn between friends, unable to save them all. A battle in which her own demons will try to unmake her.

A battle in which hearts will be broken, lovers lost, thrones burned.

HOLY SISTER completes the Book of the Ancestor trilogy that began with RED SISTER and GREY SISTER. A ground-breaking series, it has established Mark Lawrence as one of the most exciting new voices in modern speculative fiction.

Critic reviews

"An excellent writer." (George R.R. Martin)

"Dark, passionate, tense, with a female hero anyone could relate to - I was utterly fascinated! This is no pretty, flowery tale, but one of vastly different people struggling to survive when a hostile government comes to power." (Number one New York Times best-selling author Tamora Pierce)

I love this series of books. They keep you hooked all the way through and this book is no different. would highly recommend.

Another brilliant book

This is a really enjoyable trilogy of books, it gave me a slight Harry Potter vibe with he girls growing up together, but just with more murder and death.

Helen Duff does a great job at narration, the reviews saying she can only do a few accents are being petty, she brought every character to life in a nice way and it was easy to differentiate between them.

5 Stars all round.

P.S. I've put this review on each book as they all deserve more 5 start ratings.

Great Trilogy

Struggled with this last book. Didn't enjoy it as much as Red Sister and Grey Sister.

A long ending

The nuns have managed to escape from Sherzal's palace with the help of Zole. Now Zole and Nona take the shipheart to Zole's home on the ice. This is where the narrative switches to three years later. I found the switching of timelines unsettling and spoilt the book somewhat for me, while some listeners may not have found so. For this reason I have marked it down a little.

Good Ending

keeps you spellbound! Magical story of friendship and love, war and loss. Nona is just such an interesting and unique mc.

Probably the greatest trilogy of all time, beautifully narrated, and culminating with the epic Holy Sistet.

Truly Epic

A puzzle made of sharp glass pieces, that’s how I would describe the ending in the final instalment of the ‘Book of the ancestor’ trilogy.
A tightly woven plot and with as many unexpected twists and turns, it was full of moments of illation, sacrifice, revelations, characters that made hard choices and despite of the cost would make them again, and of course, bloody action.

The narration by Helen Duff was nothing short of excellent, though I loved her voice for Nona, Clera still remains my favourite.

I’ll finish off with a quote from ‘Red Sister’ that kind of summarises how I felt.

"A book is as dangerous a journey as any you might make. The person who closes the back cover may not be the same as the person who opened the front."

This was a 4.5 stars for me. I really really liked it.

It's definitely worth your time.

Great story from start to finish, couldn't stop listening. The perfect conclusion to an amazing series.

Helen Duff’s performance was masterful. Lovely voice and really believed all the characters.
This was an excellent, dramatic end to the trilogy after investing so much into the characters and story. Will look out for more by Mark Lawrence.

Good end to the trilogy

Loved the series and have re-listened to each book several times, relistening to both previous books before delving into this one. Nona Grey is possibly my favourite character ever written.
This end did not disappoint apart from leaving me wanting there to be more
