Summary

Islam once gave birth to a great civilization that respected religious diversity, freedom of conscience, and scientific thought, and Islamic knowledge contributed to the birth of humanism in the Renaissance. Today's world is desperately in need of a spirituality that is free of dogma, based in experiences not beliefs; one that can reconcile the human and spiritual realms. In his new audiobook, renowned spiritual teacher and Sufi sheikh Kabir Helminski gives us a compelling interpretation of spiritual or holistic Islam that will hearten contemporary Muslims looking for a faith suited for our times, and providing non-Muslims a brilliant introduction to this rich spiritual tradition.

Helminksi’s holistic Islam is an emerging force in the world. It is reflected in the rise of the popularity of the writings of Jalal ad-Din Rumi who is loved by followers of all faiths and none. Helminski shows how it is the great Sufi teachers of the Islamic tradition who show the way to this universal wisdom. Holistic Islam is an expression of the primordial religion of humanity that recognizes a journey through levels of consciousness leading to the transformation of self and the mature human being.

While all religions have a tendency to decline into sectarianism, legalism, fundamentalism, and superstition, humanity is never without the presence of realized human beings who have shared the knowledge and practice of communion with Ultimate Reality.

Holistic Islam is a spiritual antidote to extremism and fundamentalism, established on a clear Quranic basis. Holistic Islam uses Quranic arguments to establish a spiritually progressive Islam.

Slightly short of excellent

Certainly when the book started I found myself myself nodding in agreement.
The book would have been truly excellent had it not been for a couple of calls for discussion on a basis that in my opinion was either incomplete or poorly formed. The incomplete argument was for women imams that did not sufficiently consider relevant verses from The Holy Quran. The poorly formed argument was around homosexuality and the events surrounding the people of Lot. It becomes disingenuous when apparent calls for reconsideration, to arrive closer to what the Creator intended, are based on arguments of appeal are on incomplete or shakey ground. Otherwise the book attempts to make a reasoned appeal except at times it edges towards a bias against some Classical positions. Nevertheless, despite the flaws it is a worthwhile book to read remembering that the book itself does not aim to be prescriptive and so is open to be challenged on points that you don't agree with.

Good Book

The method of delivering the content is very calm, had slow rhythm, methodical, and the tone has empathy embroidered throughout the book. It delivers a compassionate interpretation of the content. The author was present throughout the book developing it passionately with compassionate messages and metaphors that underlined the authors interpretation. The book has excellent overall was informative and addressed some misinterpretations by non Muslim like me and, tried to develop Muslin understanding as well.

I would of liked slightly more Arabic Language joined to the spiritual Muslin understanding of the self. But overall was pleased with the book.

No detailed insights into the religion

I find this book to be very vague and abstract on the concept of Islam and what we see today be what may have been. I was hoping for this book to provide insights on what Islam's true message without the cultural or political ideologies which have shaped it today. But instead I found the author talking without saying anything, and only managed to listen to half the book
