About this listen

After Paul Stutzman lost his wife to breast cancer, he sensed a tug on his heart - the call to a challenge, the call to pursue a dream. With a mixture of dread and determination, Paul left his job, traveled to Georgia, and took his first steps on the Appalachian Trail. What he learned during the next four and a half months changed his life and can change yours as well.

In Hiking Through, you'll join Paul on his remarkable 2,176-mile trip through 14 states in search of peace and a renewed sense of purpose. Along the way, you'll meet fascinating and funny people, experience trail magic, and discover that every choice we make on the path has consequences for the journey. More than that, you'll come away with a new understanding of God's grace and guidance, even in the smallest things.

Really inspiring

Paul’s empathy and gentle humour shine through. I wasn’t looking for a book like this to listen to but for some reason I decided to try it. I am so pleased that I did. I think that this might be the push I needed back towards God. Even if you don’t believe in God, it is a fascinating account. I had no idea about the AT community. Amazing!

To much religion for an adventure story!

I was really enjoying this book for many chapters. The initial references to religion were fine, as they were part of the author’s story. But as you go through the book it becomes more and more about preaching about God. Each to their own, but it’s not what I was expecting to read, so be warned if you’re not into finding God around every corner of the trail!

Transformational journey for him and me

What a powerful true story of God discovery and self discovery, friendship and family. I would love to send this book to so many people and will pray about it. Fascinating to hear his journey of breaking away from religiosity and I too have experienced a similar freedom through loss and adversity. I do hope and pray others pick up this book and as a freebie on audible plus is such a blessing. Not sure I could endure the walk on the AT. All admiration and respect for all he persevered with and through. Thank you. God bless you.

Wow

One of the best I've listened to, leaves you thinking a lot about life and others things I won't go into.

Too much religion, not enough hiking

Too much religious rhetoric. I don’t have a problem with people having a faith but I don’t like being preached to. There are enough people and organisations in this world trying to control what we say, think and do without throwing this into the mix.

The hiking story was Ok but I prefer hiking books where other hikers stories are told as well as the authors.

A reflective, down to earth account

...And with a gaze up to Heaven as the author shares his deeply personal and open experience, which I appreciated and enjoyed hearing about. It was a thoughtful reflection of his physical, emotional and spiritual journey, which started with a significant bereavement and ended with completing the Appalachian Trail with valuable insights and healing in many ways. Definitely an expression of the Paschal Mystery - the mysterious way that from death and darkness can come life and light - even when all seems hopeless and lost.

Great narrator, too!

Compelling listening

An uplifting story, while I am not religious, I found the references to god and religions thought provoking. It has given me a new appreciation for others beliefs and why this can help others find peace in their beliefs.

Shame this isn't about hiking the AT

Started off really well then God joins him on the trail. I wanted to know what was going on with the trail not what was said in his conversations with God.

More about religion than hiking

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I have no problem with being religious, but this book is spoilt by the constant religious undertones. In fact, I'd say it's more a religion book than a hiking book. I have not problem with his past (strictly) religious upbringing, and the sad death of his wife, but the constant god-speak was too much for me. Looking back at the book, I don't remember a thing about the hike!
