Summary

The Bride by Julie Garwood meets To Tame a Highland Warrior by Karen Marie Moning in this new Highlander series from award-winning author Heather McCollum.

Clever and bold, Ella Sutherland has won the right to call herself chief of her clan and struggles to hold onto the chiefdom against those who doubt a woman’s rule. When she’s captured by the darkly handsome Sinclair chief, she chooses death over wedding him and giving up her clan to their long-time enemy. For she has a secret, an oath she took years ago to protect and keep the clan seat for a great ruler to come.

Cain refuses to let his brother, Death, honor Ella’s choice with an execution. He’s never before met a woman so brave and passionate. Everything about her, from the scars she hides on her face to the way she can ride a horse while standing on the saddle, intrigues him. Despite their growing attraction, she continues to resist his plans to unite and conquer. When enemies within the Sutherland clan threaten the oath Ella made, she escapes the Sinclairs and Cain to defend it.

Hurt by her desertion, Cain rallies his armies to take revenge, defeating the Sutherlands once and for all. But the wise words of his grandmother and the pressure growing in his heart make him question everything he’s been raised to believe. Can victory possibly come from surrender?

Comfort read! Full of elements that make a good read for adults

This is typical of the series, it has a touching plot and considerable amount of touchy-feely stuff going on in it. What made it attractive to me was the way the audible rendition brought the characters to a reality. Fabulous accents and an amazing deeply appealing voices especially the Laird.

Ridiculous

Macho alpha male and stupid defiant female is a recipe for ridiculousness. The battle scene is nonsensical as is the 'horsemen' theme.

Enjoyable listen

This book was a pleasant surprise as it had more to it than many Scottish bodice ripper type books, and the heroine had more about her.

At first I was not sure but fell in love!

The pace at the start and reader’s stiffness made me unsure about this book at the start, but it turned into a really witty and surprising novel. I loved it in the end and pre warning there is a bit of smut but it’s a good listen and sweet!

Good fun read, excellent main character

Someone in the reviews described the main character as'stupid, defiant woman'. That could not be further from the truth. The main character is actually strong and not only 'feminine' ways which was massively refreshing to read. An excellent rider and strategist she proves herself repeatedly to the men of this book. Yes the men are macho and exaggerated in their masculinity but Heather McCollum always makes them grow out of their toxicity. That is the character growth for the men in her books, from toxicily masculine to more balanced. This book has the usual male growth and a main character who is ACTUALLY fierce, brave, clever and kind (instead of praising survival of men unharmed as 'strength') and it was full of the same humour and twists that I've come to expect from a Heather McCollum book. A good fun read.

Enjoyed it

First time reading this time period but really enjoyed it. Took a while to understand the horseman theme but looking forward to seeing how it progresses throughout the series with each brother. The narrator was great too, handles all the accents and characters well!

I Absolutely Loved this Book

I loved this book. Everything about it. The plot, the characters everything.
The narrator brought it all to life. The sign of a good book is one that takes you on a journey & this book did just that. I'm off to listen to the next instalment.
I would definitely recommend it
