About this listen
Successful lady novelist Laura Morland and her boisterous young son, Tony, set off to spend Christmas at her country home in the sleepy surrounds of High Rising. But Laura's wealthy friend and neighbour, George Knox, has taken on a scheming secretary whose designs on marriage to her employer threaten the delicate social fabric of the village.
Can clever, practical Laura rescue George from Miss Grey's clutches and, what's more, help his daughter, Miss Sibyl Knox, to secure her longed-for engagement?
Utterly charming and very funny, High Rising is irresistible comic entertainment.

A deliciously amusing tale of English village life
Any additional comments?
This book has been my introduction to the novels of Angela Thirkell and what a pleasure it has been. The main character, Laura, a contented long-time widow, lives with her youngest son, Tony, a high-spirited, very loquacious railway enthusiast (!), in Barsetshire, where she has a full and busy life, She is the author of a series of popular novels but is also deeply involved in the lives of those around her. There is some romance and a great deal of humour in her story which was beautifully narrated by Jilly Bond.

Where is the intro from A McCall Smith?
The details said there was an intro from Alexander McCall Smith but this was not the case. Fun and lighthearted book.

Enjoyable
I found this to be a very well written novel; very convincing characterisation and of its time.

Of its time but politically challenging
I listened for a WEA course on two of the author’s novels. I tried to keep an open mind but the racism and antisemitism are jarring to a modern ear. The tutor is excellent and I am confident she will do a great job. I know it was a different time and I do like character driven novels. Perhaps I’ll review again post course

Fabulous
Brilliant fun, subtle period writing, humorous and witty, a novel from the perspective of a mature woman. (Just needs the anti-Semitism removed.)

Charming and witty
An classic observational novel about the intrigues of village life in the Edwardian era, witty and engaging, clever without being trying. Perfect for these times, a reminder of how we should all be.

High rising
I really enjoyed this story. How clever with her use of words and characters was the author. I had to look up incubus. I think it was a bit cruel calling the character this but suppose it was meant in a liberal way to describe her.

High Rising
I read Three Houses by Angela Thirkell and was really looking forward to reading something else by her. I stuck with this boring tale until half way through Chapter 5 when l really could not bring myself to listen to such puerile nonsense any longer. It is absolutely the most excruciating story, it goes nowhere and is so self indulgent l can only think it was either written to amuse herself or was a pot boiler. A complete waste of my credit, sadly
