Summary

Read by the author.

New York Times best-selling author Donald Miller shares the plan that led him to turn his life around.

There are four characters in every story: the victim, the villain, the hero, and the guide. These four characters live inside us. If we play the victim, we’re doomed to fail. If we play the villain, we will not create genuine bonds. But if we play the hero or guide, our lives will flourish. The hard part is being self-aware enough to know which character we are playing.

In this book, Donald will use his own experiences to help you recognize if the character you are currently surfacing is helping you experience a life of meaning. He breaks down the transformational, yet practical, plan that took him from slowly giving up to rapidly gaining a new perspective of his own life’s beauty and meaning, igniting his motivation, passion, and productivity, so you can do the same.

The lessons in this book will teach you how to:

  • Help you discover when you are playing the victim and villain.
  • Create a simple life plan that will bring clarity and meaning to your goals ahead.
  • Take control of your life by choosing to be the hero in your story.
  • Cultivate a sense of creativity about what your life can be.
  • Move beyond just being productive to experiencing a deep sense of meaning.

Donald Miller will help you identify the many chances you have of being the hero in your life, and the times when you are falling into the trap of becoming the victim. He will guide you in developing a unique plan that will speak to the challenges you currently face so you, too, can find the fulfillment you have been searching for in your life and work.

Playful and easy-to-apply life plan guide

The latest book from Donald Miller - Hero on a Mission - is a great way to start your 2022 transformation.
Using excellent storyteller skills, the author will help you understand different parts of our personality to establish a better quality of life. The path to our transformation and finally becoming participants and "authors of our life story" is led by really catchy metaphors taking inspiration in the main characters of every good movie/literal story.
Every coach or person aware of self-refinement needs will benefit from the playful and easy-to-apply guide to create a life plan.
For a person like me who prefers audiobooks, it was a very valuable investment of 6h of my time, and I will for sure use a lot of ideas proposed by the author in my own life and sessions with my clients.

Made Me Pause, Reflect and Prepare!

Donald is a brilliant writer, even at the age of 28 I found the concepts in here powerful and made me really reflect on the short but extraordinary opportunity life gives us and how the perspective of a hero on a mission can help me make the most of it!

Modern & Practical Spin on Viktor Frankl’s Work

Maybe it’s just me but “meaning” often feels like a fleeting idea these days. Donald Miller addresses that tension head on in hero on a mission.

I enjoy most books that I read and I find helpful nuggets no matter what. But this book may be one of the most important books I read in my entire life because of the current season I’m in as a father of young children, as the owner of a young butt quickly growing company, and as a person of faith struggling to make sense of so much right now. It’s rare that I want to send a book to every person that I love but this one checks all the boxes and I’ve already started sending it.

I’m also so grateful that we get to hear his voice in this audio book because you can hear the emotion and the nuance as he discusses philosophy, his family, his dog, and the practical ways we can navigate meaning in our individual lives.

It might be a little unfair not to leave out the fact that I know Don personally. I’ve been able to work alongside him The last couple of years creating video/photo content for his company. That said, I’ve heard many of these principles on camera and off camera but the way he weaves them together in this book is extraordinary. Pure brilliance.

A must read/listen!

Better than I expected

I don’t know why but I severely underestimated this book. I initially thought it would be just another basic archetypal book- but it’s so much more.

Not overly complex, but very actionable.
I love how it cuts through philosophical clutter into something you can actually apply.

A very refreshing read.

Meaning

If you are hopeless, directionless, and going through the mundane seemingly meaningless cadence of life- this book is for you. Donald Miller is a fantastic story teller where he lays a foundation, pulls it into his personal story and then challenges the readier on practical steps to start living a life worth living- a life of meaning. Highly recommend

Found this book filled with current thinking around timeless principles- well worth the listen!

The author did an outstanding job of identifying how so many people show up in life and describe a path forward to achieve Hero ( and even Guide) status in a straightforward manner. He makes clear the to goal in not perfection but progress and towards that end provides some insightful tools to apply on the journey.

Great Delivery & Tools, Myopic Reinterpretations

Donald delivers a very well structured self organizational method with several solid sources - such as Victor Frankel. However, the author spends as much time name dropping and privilege projecting to self justify his personal success as a virtue. Further, the author spends more time selling himself and his friends that it is no wonder that his message marketing has translated into reciprocal success. If anything, speaking more about the generosity of a hero would be more proficient and productive. Too much bragging and self justification with god-as-a-hedge.
