He loved to be attended and entertained by boisterous young men who shared his passion for sport, but at other times he was more diverted by men of intellect, culture and wit. Often trusting and easily led by his male attendants and advisers during the early years of his reign, he matured into a profoundly suspicious and paranoid king whose favour could be suddenly withdrawn, as many of his later servants found to their cost. His cruelty and ruthlessness would become ever more apparent as his reign progressed, but the tenderness that he displayed towards those he trusted proves that he was never the one-dimensional monster that he is often portrayed as.

I learned far more than I thought I would
Such an interesting take on a well known set of facts. I was particularly interested in the way Henry moved backwards and forwards between pro and anti religious reformism. I never really knew a huge amount of Cranmer before this and found him to be a fascinating character.
Really good narration too.

The sustained good narration.
I am a Tudor buff whilst some facts can be uninspiring the narrative was well delivered and easy to listen to. I will look out for more.

Unexpectedly fascinating.
I hadn't expected this book to be as interesting as it is. I was expecting a slimmed down Scarisbrick and this is completely different. The focus is on Henry, has to be given he dominated every company he was in, but the descriptions of the men that surrounded him and to an extent manipulated him is a real game changer. I thought this book was very well read. I have listened through once and will gladly listen through again.

Thoroughly enjoyable
Great performance from the narrator. I know the history of the Tudors quite well but this book comes at the history from an unusual aspect. It concentrates on Henry VIII's relationships with the men that served him and opens up a window onto the private machinations that went on behind the reign's more well known events.

Fascinating
Fascinating to those interested in British history and Henry viii. Probably the only audiobook which I listened to the end and then wanted to hear all again. Tragic and amazing!
