Summary

Roger Brown has it all. He's the country's most successful headhunter. He has a beautiful wife and a magnificent house. And to maintain this lifestyle, he's also a highly accomplished art thief. At a gallery opening, his wife introduces him to Clas Greve. Not only is Greve the perfect candidate for a position with one of Roger's high-profile clients, he is also in possession of 'The Calydonian Boar Hunt' by Rubens, one of the most sought-after paintings in the world.

Roger sees his chance to be rich beyond his wildest dreams and starts planning his boldest heist yet. But soon, he runs into trouble - and this time money is the least of his worries.

Best yet!

Much as I like dear Harry Hole, I found this stand-alone Jo Nesbo's best book yet. Shorter than some, but every word counts. The main protagonist, Roger Brown, is not the most sympathetic or likeable of characters, but he grows on you as the book progresses. Cleverly plotted with some wonderful descriptive writing (the scene in the outside toilet had me shuddering with both laughter and revulsion) I enjoyed this book enormously.

Sean Barrett is one of the few narrators who can, in my opinon, 'do' female voices without making them sound half witted (unless of course, that's what's called for). He makes his usual great job of reading this book too.

Master reader

Sean Barrett is a master reader. His seemingly understated narrative voice propels the story inexorably and then, when his characters appear, we have 3D totally believable people populating our imagination. Completely comfortable, and accurate, with Scandinavian names and places, he is outstanding in both Nesbo and Henning Mankell. Once you get hooked on his story-telling, it is difficult to stop listening.

A terrific story

Despite the main character being an arrogant, psychologically manipulative and thoroughly unpleasant man it's a riveting story. I couldn't stop listening to find out what on earth would happen next. It's full of surprises and exciting scenes. Sean Barrett does a fine job of narrating the story which is told in the first person creating the feeling that that one is listening to events as they happen.

Excellent!

Superb writer. He keeps you gripped from the first minute. Some of the facts are a little far fetched but not enough to put you off.

Ye Gods, am I reading the same book?

Goodness gracious me, even Sean Barrett sounds bored. I cannot go any further than chapter three!
The main character is so obnoxious that I want to strike him, I cannot bring myself to follow any further. The Audible reviews are very favourable, so having started and being so stunned by this rubbish - I went to Amazon to check out those reviews, and there are many who agree with me.
I am a major fan of Jo Nesbo and have bought all of his books to date - but this one is just so awful with its nasty main character that I cannot finish it, it is also boring in the extreme!!

So implausible...

Excellent narration throughout didn't save this story.

I found the plotting and characters totally implausible and many of the settings rather contrived. From the outset, I didn't buy into the central premise of the 'art thief' driving the plotting. I'm happy to suspend disbelief, but not that far. One unlikely character after another was added to the mix and with each twist, the story became all the more unbelievable. There's a lot of violence, which doesn't bother me per se, but some of it felt gratuitous and added little. I particularly disliked the violence involving animals. OveralI, endured rather than enjoyed this standalone from the Harry Hole author.

Disappointing

I was looking forward to reading this book and made a point of not watching the movie beforehand.I was rather disappointed. The plot lacks the clever intricacy of Nesbo's other books and does not seem to grip the listener. I would not recommend this read.

Not a patch on the others

Well this was easy listening and fairly good but a more accurate title would be "An extremely convenient series of events". An OK read if you don't think too hard about it!

Saw the film and loved the audiobook

I went to see the film of Headhunters some months ago, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. After deciding I had to experience Headhunters again I was torn between reading the book and downloading the audio book. I am so glad I chose the latter. The story was told magnificently and I pictured the action as the film had showed it. Of course the book contains more information than the film which made it even more enjoyable. As mentioned in another review some of the story is a little far fetched but who cares. I cannot recommend this enough.

Fantastic!

Typical Nesbo. Great story and the best narrator out there with the marvelous Sean Barret!
