Summary

Vietnam vet and former pro football player Wyatt Storme is bow-hunting in Missouri when he stumbles upon a hidden field of marijuana, and is attacked by a vicious dog and shot at by a sniper. He reports violent incident confidentially to the local Sheriff, who is murdered the next day. Storme believes there's a connection and starts asking questions, unraveling a deadly conspiracy of corruption, drug-trafficking and organized crime, and making himself someone that just about everybody wants dead.

Great action, great story & a perfect narrator

Okay, I admit it. I’m a sucker for action thrillers - the ones where the hero is a stolid moral man, who lives by his own innate sense of justice and right, offended by the world & the shortcuts or amorality that is acceptable, in the name of getting along and going along for an easy life.

And the the very best of these protagonists always always ALWAYS have a love interest, which plays along as a bubbling under sub-plot, and - best of all - the possibly psychotic, certainly lethal and totally badass buddy, the one with a dark past and a bromance that burns up the page with snark and crack-me-up-every-time dry and self-deprecatory humour.

And BOY, this thriller has all those in spades.

Not only that, but it has Mr Liquid Gold, himself - J. Rodney Turner to you and I - narrating it, trickling his warm molasses southern/Ozarks accent into your ear and setting the action, detail and humour to a level of lyricism and wrap-you-in-a-bloody-great-storiness (look, Ma, I made a new word!) that is simply magnificent.

I wasn’t even halfway through this auditory treat when I decided, yup, yessireebub, and bought the next audiobook in the series.

And I wasn’t disappointed, in the slightest. I have listened to Mr Ripley’s work before, in the Trenton Legacy, and was impressed, but this? This is something else.

Whomsoever loves the likes of Dave “Streak” Robicheaux, Spenser, Elvis Cole, Myron Bolitar and all those other established wonderful characters, will love - and I mean LOVE - Ripley’s hilarious and absorbing double act, namely ex-NFL pro & Vietnam veteran Wyatt Storme & his hard-drinking & humorous ex-spook assassin buddy, Chick Easton.

I spent the last four hours of this gem, ruminating on how Netflix or Amazon should be updating this storyline to more modern conflicts and making a series out of these guys. It’s every bit as good as “Shooter”, and that is high praise, as I love the Swagger novels, and the intelligent updated treatment they were given for TV consumption.

These guys are begging for your attention, and now audiobook 2, and the almost ASMR-honeyed tones of J Rodney are calling my name, demanding I listen some more.

Do yourself a favour - if you love humour, action, suspense, hook-and-twist and some heroes who leave you feeling justice has been served and the world is a little better for their efforts (even only in the literary world), indulge yourself with this little beauty.

Y’all won’t be sorry none, you (as one of the less salubrious characters might have put it).

I loved it.
