About this listen

Otto and Raven are desperate to rescue their friends from the clutches of Anastasia Furan, head of the evil Disciples organisation.

First they must track down the location of the Glasshouse, the prison where Furan trains children to become ruthless assassins. But Otto is also being hunted.

The three months that Otto has spent following his expulsion from H.I.V.E. have given the Artemis Section - an elite division of the American intelligence services that specialises in capturing the toughest targets and reports only to the president - an opportunity to locate him.

This eighth book in the breathtaking H.I.V.E. series continues the high-octane adventures of the supremely talented criminal team, with the central characters forced to question everything that Nero has taught them and to confront the consequences of life as a villain, set against the backdrop of a daring high-tech prison break where nothing is quite as it seems.

Really good story line, and a great plot. What can I say, whens the next one?!

Great

What a pity this series ends with so many potential story lines left hanging. Good fun.

If you could sum up H.I.V.E.: Deadlock in three words, what would they be?

I love the series and the characters. However, I didn't like to ending.

What was one of the most memorable moments of H.I.V.E.: Deadlock?

Laura's revelation to Otto.

What didn’t you like about Will Thorp’s performance?

Didn't like his voice for any of the characters. Especially for Raven and Frans, just bad.

I was left wanting more from this book.

The narrator can’t represent Scottish accents compelling storyline. A fab series that leaves you wanting the next book.

Aeeictive series

No, seriously. I'm not just bigging up how good this book was (but it was fantastic) but he set this book up perfectly for a sequel in 2013 and here we are in 2020 and if you google H.I.V.E. 9 then it says that it exists and that he's writing it and even how many pages it has on some sites but it doesn't even have a title!

Anyway enough of me ranting about how long it's taking Mark Walden to write a book, this is meant to be a review.

Overall I thought that this book was amazing. The backstory for Raven and Nero was exactly as I always imagined and I really enjoyed The Architect ad his relationship with Darkdoom, Nero and Professor Pike especially.

But Will Thorp. Literally. Did. The. Same. Voice. For. Every. Character. (Basically) Jack Davenport was perfect in every way, and Richard Coyle was very close, but when he narrated Wing sounded rubbish and HIVEMind sounded like Siri. But after a while, you got used to it. This though, from Will Thorpe, was frustratingly bad. Raven even sounded like a little girl, not a Russian assassin, and No. 1 didn't sound remotely threatening.

In summary, I absolutely love this series, I just want a sequel and Jack Davenport to narrate all of them.

Where is H.I.V.E. No. 9!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Deadlock 4 the wim I’m at HIVE

The HIVE students are growing up in this book. We've got a bit more blossoming love interest, school exams (HIVE style) and personalities rounding out. The big plus as far as my 10 & 12 year old sons were concerned was finally getting some of Raven's backstory (all assassins have good backstory right?) which turns out just to be as bleak as you'd imagine. There has been much discussion about whether Raven and Marvel's Black Widdow were both students of the Glass House in the back of the car ... The book ends on a proper cliff hanger, so be prepared to have the next book on stand by.

The plus for me was that Franz develops too. In this book he's not just the fat kid who makes everyone laugh. You find out that the boy does actually have skills. Respect due.

Finally! The Raven / Dr Nero backstory!

What did you like most about H.I.V.E.: Deadlock?

Relief that Laura was rescued.

What was one of the most memorable moments of H.I.V.E.: Deadlock?

Laura getting a message out from the glasshouse.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Will Thorp?

Unlikely.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Penny's reaction to the loss of Tom.

Any additional comments?

I thought it was a real shame the reader was changed. Jack Davenport and Richard Coyle were great, Will Thorp made big changes and the characters didn't feel the same at all.

Great story, shame about the change of reader

This is one of the best books in the series and one of the best series I have ever read

Amazing

I have listened to every other Hive book and this one they have changed all the voice overs and it does NOT have the same emphasis or continuity. Very disappointing.
The change of vocal accompaniment spoils the story and lacks the tension, excitement and makes the story less gripping. 3/10
Raven does not NOT even have an accent 1/10
