Summary
Jane Moneypenny is the perfect example of chic sophistication and unflappable poise. She handles her cohort of unruly 00 agents with good-humoured grace. Enjoyable but…
I didn’t know what to expect so this was a pleasant enough read.
The alternate view from Jane Moneypenny’s perspective is a nice twist and adds to the James Bond landscape. The tone of the storytelling feels contemporary with the early sixties setting. The writer has given Miss M a straighter laced, 1950s voice rather than Lois Maxwell’s more flirtatious portrayal in the films. Eleanor Bron’s characterisation is excellent as the colonially brought up Miss M.
So here’s the but… It does feel rather like a women’s magazine story. Don’t expect a reimagined Moneypenny she is definitely out of Flemming’s stable of only slightly capable female protagonists. Although heavily involved in the action of Bond’s mission to Cuba she seems to negotiate the difficult situations without any real skill - it feels almost accidental.
That said I’m convinced enough to read the next instalment.

A good listen
Narration was very good.
I enjoyed this book. I love the James Bond books and it was great to see Miss Moneypenny taking the star roll for a change. I was able to recognise the parts of the story in relationship to the Bond books. Will definitely be listening to more in the series

Quirky insight into a well-loved series
Where does Guardian Angel: The Moneypenny Diaries, Book 1 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
A good choice and one I will probably listen to again. Worth the credit.
What other book might you compare Guardian Angel: The Moneypenny Diaries, Book 1 to, and why?
Not sure there is one. This was so different to the usual adventure or romance books, so it doesn't really fit any genre.
What does Eleanor Bron bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
She brings emotion and the feeling that the ever-confident and slightly cold Moneypenny from the original books was human after all.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The moments when Moneypenny realises she and her heart have been betrayed. Also the parts where it's obvious that she's really in love with Bond and he hasn't a clue.
Any additional comments?
Give it a go. A little hard to get into at the start, but keep going as the characters grow on you. A light and easy listen.

surprisingly good
Non-Ian Fleming Bond books are somewhat of a mixed bag, but I am a bit of a sucker for them. So it was with some doubt in my mind thatI bought the Moneypenny diaries trilogy in one of Audible's sales, but much to my surprise perhaps, thoroughly enjoyed them. Gripping, good storylines dovetailed into the original James Bond books, and well drawn, interesting and likeable characters. Narration is first class, really enhancing enjoyment of the books.
