About this listen

Grog is a brute (half Human, half Ukar) slave raised from birth to fight in the pits for the entertainment of the crowds. He is content with his role in the city, proud of his barracks, and in awe of his owner, the sour Master Horne. Life, by Grog's reckoning, is good. Then an enigmatic churchwoman enters his life, and Grog finds himself swept from the city which has been his entire world, to travel and learn amid as strange a group as he has ever seen. He knows nothing of the group's mission, just that his skills are necessary and the quest is "a good thing." But slowly, on this strange journey of both distance and spirit, Grog learns of the goal his new employer pursues, and its role in a troubled world. More importantly, he learns the value, and price, of freedom, and neither aspect is anything like what he imagined.

A fast-paced fantasy novel by the author of the popular Dream series (and 18 other novels), Grog takes the listener on a journey through an embattled Empire and a world in which things are seldom as simple as one expects.

I've really enjoyed this. The story is written from a perspective of a "foot soldier" leaving a lot of purpose of the main adventure out until the very end. It focuses on the simple things because using author's own words "you win on simple things". I found that very refreshing and I generally enjoy more down to earth and less epic fantasy. Interesting down to earth story

I enjoyed Grog's practical view of his world. It reminded me a little of Conan the Barbarian, but Grog is more intelligent! Altogether, a nice little adventure story.

First person narrative

so first toff the person who wrote a 1* review about how grog is stupid but he can do this and that obviously didn't listen very well.

so the narrator done an excellent job, really brought the characters to life!

story started off strong, then felt more and more rushed to get it finished towards the end , and really nothing dramatic happens, nothing grabs you , and the write deffo could of took more time and got 2 books out of it.

all in all it was a good filler till my next credit.

good to pass some time.

Grog is a wonderful atypical hero, who in another story might have been a minor character associated with a villain. I really want to see how he develops.

I loved Grog’s character

I was really not sure what to expect, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The characters were great and Grog was brilliant. Loved the narrator too. His interpretation of the characters was very good.

Reading the description you would think this would be a basic bitch fantasy adventure. However it is surprisingly original and the voice work is spot on for the characters. As a veteran myself it feels like listening to all of my ex Marine buddies thinking through civilian life. Satisfying fantasy adventure, would highly recommend listening.

Surprisingly excellent!
