Summary

The first of the classic mysteries featuring governess-turned-detective Miss Silver, who investigates a deadly conspiratorial ring.

Charles Moray has come home to England to collect his inheritance. After four years wandering the jungles of India and South America, the hardy young man returns to the manor of his birth, where generations of Morays have lived and died. Strangely, he finds the house unlocked, and sees a light on in one of its abandoned rooms. Eavesdropping, he learns of a conspiracy to commit a fearsome crime.

Never one for the heroic, Charles’s first instinct is to let the police settle it. But then he hears her voice. Margaret, his long lost love, is part of the gang. To unravel their diabolical plot, he contacts Miss Silver, a onetime governess who applies her reason to solve crimes and face the dangers of London’s underworld.

Very good - get the lot!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - it is gripping and takes you to another world

Who was your favorite character and why?

All the characters are well delineated and it is very authentically of its time.

Any additional comments?

The narrator reads skilfully. if you like Agatha Christie or Margery Allingham you will very much enjoy these and I have enjoyed them more than the Ngaio Marsh series - Miss Silver and Patricia Wentworth deserve to be very much better known.

Old fashioned but still good mystery

Would you consider the audio edition of Grey Mask to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the printed version so can't say.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Grey Mask?

None in particular, although the ending was good.

What about Diana Bishop’s performance did you like?

I thought she was perfect as the narrator. Her style and delivery is very good and evocative of the period.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, I enjoyed the whole thing.

Any additional comments?

This is the first Patricia Wentworth I have listened to and I will be listening to more especially if Diana Bishop is the narrator. They are stories for fans of old fashioned detective stories. Absolutely first rate.

Ripping yarn. Great fun.

A 1920s detective novel in the best style of the genre. Simply too thrilling for words.

An early Miss Silver

Got off to a slow and confusing start and I found Margot very irritating but I wanted to keep listening and it was worth it as the plot led to an exciting end. I like the Miss Silver mysteries but Miss Silver's role was different in this early book.

Good story, shame about Margot

Great story, especially if you like cosy period murders with a twinkly little lady that's sharp as a tack. One for the Agatha Christie fans.

Just a shame that one of the central characters Margot Standing who's life is in peril is so annoying both how she is written and narrated. I'm ashamed to say at times I was hoping would get bumped off!

Narrator doesn't have a massive range in terms of voices, but generally a pleasing tone.

Unmasked

I only intended to listen for half an hour but had to finish it!

The narrator is excellent and i'm delighted to see the same narrator is used throughout the series. It is hard to credit that it is only one persons voice used for all the characters as each is so believable and recognisable. I have read the books which I had really enjoyed and had definite characters formed in my mind because of this I was worried that an audio version might disappoint - this audio book did not disappoint... Diana Bishop saw to that!

The only thing that spoils the experience for me is at the end when you get the big movie type voice announcing what you have been listening to - drives me mad and I hate it, such strange pronunciations as well!

Brilliant

This is one of Patricia Wentworth's best "Miss Silver" stories. It grabs your attention right from the first chapter and holds your interest all the way to the end. Grey Mask is not revealed until the end. So there are many twists and mysteries to be revealed. I really enjoyed it.
I really enjoy Diana Bishop's narration too. She has a lovely relaxing voice and her characterisations are very good too.

Dated but enjoyable

My first Patricia Wentworth story and not a delight as it was so dated in its narrative but maybe that's part of its charm. I shall try another I think

Rather more penetrating than I had expected.

Daft plot, but interesting characters portrayed with more insight than many books of this genre. I will read more Patricia Wentworth.

Tempted to listen to other books by this author.

The only reason I did not give this book five stars was that I was wishing and pleading that the baddies would kill their female target ASAP so I would not have to listen to her insipid stupid dialogue. A good book other then that.
