Summary

In Rendell's evocative portrayal of West London, the slums of Notting Hill Gate and the mews houses of Holland Park may, geographically, only be streets apart but, socially, they are worlds apart. When these two worlds collide, the repercussions are fatal. Guy, from a council flat in Notting Hill Gate and Lenora, a wealthy middle-class young girl were childhood sweethearts, and despite Lenora’s mother’s disapproval, belonged to the same criminal gang. But as they grew older, Lenora became increasingly distant as she grew apart from Guy. Turning his innocent love into a dangerous, psychopathic obsession. When Leonora announces her engagement, Guy knows there must be some mistake - and he is determined to right it, at any cost. As he becomes the victim of his own murderous madness, nobody is safe.

Narration

Good story as are all Ruth Rendell for me. But i found the narration too strident and harsh. Not easy to listen too.

It's a shame

I like this author a great deal, however this story does not travel well through time s9me 30+ years after publication. I found the main characters very annoying. Leonora and her family facilitated the deluded Guy, feeding his false assumptions and twisted mental processes which would not happen in the 2020's. The book suffers from obvious and easily anticipated plot lines which in this day and age, does not engender in the listener any sense of psychological thrill. The quality of the writing carried me through to the conclusion but it's not a book I would recommend.

Story of obsessive love not for me.

Managed about 7 chapters before I gave up. Not helped by possibly the most strident narration that I’ve heard for some time with constant forceful emphasis that makes it hard to engage. That may have been in keeping with the nature of the main protagonist but is exhausting. Definitely not for me.

Over the top story and narration

I’ve read and listened to many of the author’s books and this is the first one I felt lacked her usual subtlety of characterisation. Most of the people in the story are caricatures not least Guy the unrequited lover of Leonora. The never ending repetition of his obsessive and paranoid behaviour became tedious. There is no variation in the tone of the book not helped by the excessively expressive narration that kept at fever pitch for most of the book.

Bizarre narration

It's impossible to comment on the story as it was ruined by the overblown and strident narration.

Quite an enjoyable read.

A thoroughly unlikeable, ain character, although none of the other characters were likable either. It went on a bit, however was quite an enjoyable 'read'. The narration good.

A Pain In The Ears

They're hit and miss these RR books and they've dated incredibly quickly. This is a long way from her best but it was free so no harm done, other than to the ears.

The narration is horrendous. The reader shrieks and screeches his hysterical way through the story, resulting in one of the worse performances I've ever experienced on Audible.

Narrator spoiled it, I couldn't finish the book.

Narrated in a super - angry way, every word, spat out, very irritating. Was unable to listen to more than an hour. A shame as the story seemed quite good.

A bit tedious to begin with, but gathers pace

The psychology of the characters is very believable. I gradually got drawn in, and there's also some humour.

Not an easy listen but eventually rewarding

Loud shouty narration with heavy emphasis used on unnecessary occasions all through, rather ear hurty and certainly not relaxing. Yet I got drawn in mainly because I fell in love with Celeste and distrusted Leonora… it was hard to feel sorry for Guy, although I did a bit in the end. He was played in such a sneering petulant angry voice it rebuffed sympathy. I wouldn’t choose any other books narrated by this man because it was angled not to be the smooth experience that I prefer.

going very wrong

This is one long and very tedious rant of a mad man. Nothing happens. Nothing is even curious. I like this author, too. I doggedly waded through the entire thing hoping it would be very clever like other books of hers. Total disappointment, waste of time and money.

Good but not Great.

Listened with intent. Just wish RR had introduced other voices. There is an interesting cast of characters. Listening to Guy's well written, but ultimately too repetitive ravings, begged for some relief.
