Summary

No one would have described Manningtree Grove as fashionable. Few would have found it especially interesting. But it was not an unpleasant place to live: the old railway line lay in a valley, and the gardens looked onto it. It was the kind of place where nothing ever happened. Yet it was here that Peter Yearman first sold his soul to the devil....

Undoubtedly a masterpiece

The apotheosis of the genre. Perfection. A miracle of sustained storytelling. Unmatched first sentence. Overall, great.

Underwhelmed

Oh dear. I didn’t like ANY of the characters and found the plot pretty unbelievable.
Narration was fine, considering the material.
Good job it was free…

Interesting and intriguing

A long book which develops quite well, albeit a bit confusingly at times, a number of themes and characters. Well read but it rather fizzles out at the end with no clear resolution other than the one the listener’s imagination provides.

All so clear and so confused

It seem all so predictable and clear, all imagination and pretence and dubious motives, nobody to trust to be without planning and conniving. Wouldn’t that be easy to resolve? Well too easy for sure so the fitting end leaves more mysteries to solve. The suspense was driving me impatient as it seemed so logical what could be the only outcome but knowing Ruth Rendells stories there’d be a twist or two and a plunge in the end to push it all open again. The drama is nicely increased by the very capable narrator. He transferred the story to another level of drama and increased the tension immensely. More and more the actors of the stories became puppets in a theatre just not sure who or what pulled the strings or who or what the real monster was in the end. Whatever it was it should be back in the box again or I will hear some parts of the narration in my dreams.

Definitely worth a listen

I really enjoyed this title which was undoubtedly enhanced greatly by the narrator, one of my favourites

Smooth and enjoyable narration clever story

As always Ruth Rendell works her magic. This time it is about Doreen/aka Dolly, and her brother Peter/aka Pup who is an aspiring geomancer/aka a magician… so many intertwined hopes, fears, ambitions and running alongside the crazy thought processes of a deranged Irishman Connor/aka Diarmad. Well, you can settle down for hours of untangling and twisted achievements of barely admitted aspirations all careering towards an inevitable finale in a disused train tunnel…

Good.

Good story with well rounded characters. A couple of different threads running in parallel coming g together for the ending. Very well narrated by Ric Jerrom.

Good listen

I really loved this book
i usually like crime and mystery but this book really surprised me in a good way. There are a few instances where it gets a bit weird but overall this is a really good book. I would definitely recommend this book
