Summary

It is woven into the fabric of modern evangelicalism. The subject of numerous books, conferences, and sermons every year, it’s promoted as essential for a vibrant relationship with Christ, and a measure of the maturity of your faith. What is it? Hearing God speak personally, outside of Scripture.

But is God trying to speak to you through signs, impressions, and subtle promptings? Is he whispering to you in a still, small voice, hoping to grab your attention? Does Scripture promise that every Christian will receive personal, private revelations from the Lord?

In God Doesn’t Whisper, Pastor Jim Osman examines the assumptions, practices, and proof texts of those who promote a theology of hearing the voice of God. Dig into the texts often cited in defense of trying to hear God speak outside of His written Word. Scripture is clear: God doesn’t whisper.

I was disappointed...

I downloaded the sample of this book expecting to easily reject his views. I've heard the 'small quiet voice'. I've made decisions based on it.

Disappointingly, the author is correct. He uses Scripture extensively and carefully to show that God never 'whispers'. In Scripture there's never any doubt that God is speaking, and what he's saying. The problem, rather, is people ignoring what he says. The idea of barely discernible nudges is found nowhere in Scripture. Even less, the idea that you have to learn to hear His voice through a methodology or process or by making repeated errors. He even demolishes the oft-cited 'small quiet voice' of Elijah (cited by another reviewer) - it doesn't refer to internal revelation (and in any case is difficult to translate). Elijah had no difficulty discerning God's message.

This book is a must. It's also a huge relief. No longer do I have the fear of wrongly discerning God's will by being mistaken about a nudge or whisper. We have responsibility, and God guides us clearly - he speaks by his Spirit illuminating the Word, which IS sufficient. We don't need more revelation to live our lives.

None of this precludes God acting in the world. Indeed, he sustains the world. But He isn't going to tell you what to have for dinner through a quiet, small voice.

The book could, perhaps, have been edited down a little, but the narration and writing is easy to understand and I enjoyed listening thoroughly.

A book much needed!

Great and highly needed in todays christian climate. A lot of quotes in the book, so you need to stay in tune if you want to follow some of the arguments. Will recommend it to my church.
