Summary

Marissa Meyer, number one New York Times best-selling author, returns to the fairytale world with this retelling of Rumpelstiltskin.

Long ago cursed by the god of lies, a poor miller’s daughter has developed a talent for spinning stories that are fantastical and spellbinding and entirely untrue.

Or so everyone believes.

When one of Serilda’s outlandish tales draws the attention of the sinister Erlking and his undead hunters, she finds herself swept away into a grim world where ghouls and phantoms prowl the earth and hollow-eyed ravens track her every move. The king orders Serilda to complete the impossible task of spinning straw into gold or be killed for telling falsehoods. In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious boy to her aid. He agrees to help her...for a price. Love isn’t meant to be part of the bargain.

Soon Serilda realises that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever.

Wish I’d read sooner (spoilers)

This is so clever and fantastical and lyrical. I am in awe of Marissa Meyer’s creativity, her story telling and the world and characters she has conjured. Mesmerising. Do I love my 18 year old main character being pregnant? No… but I get that it’s part of the rumplestiltzkin story so… yeh.
Gild 🥹❤️ I am so glad I read so close to cursed being out. Not long to wait!!

What a beautiful discover

*Spoiler free review*
I just stumbled across this book by accident and boy did I not regret giving away 1 Credit for it.

To sum it up, this book is story that cherishes stories.

A rare book where the threads of truth and the threads of lies get tangled into the spinning wheels of fortune. However, you never know in which direction the spinning wheel turns.

i liked the protagonist a lot. She may come off at first as the typical female protagonist, but I like her way of thinking. She knows where she lies in her world, but cares and risks her life for her loved ones.

The narration was also very good. The moments she started narrating the "stories" that Sherilda told the children where my favourite. (This is not technically a spoiler since one of them is the Sample of the book). I think it was there and in the moments when characters were talking with pure unadulterated emotion that the actor thrived.

I would definitely recommend for anyone that wants fantasy covered in good writing. A fantastic thriller that will hook you with its charming protagonist and her love for stories, but will keep you with all the mysteries that started to surround her.

May the threads of the tale capture you as they captured me.

A Gripping Conclusion

I’ve enjoyed many of Marissa Meyers books over the years. I struggled with Gilded initially, as it felt quite slow for the first 60% or so, but I’m so glad I persevered. The action really came together at the end and I immediately ordered Cursed to continue the tale. The Narrator was really good and matched the story perfectly.

Dark but so entertaining

I enjoyed this book almost as much as the Lunar Chronicles. The story took lovely unexpected turns and I couldn't stop listening. The only criticism I have is that it darker and more violent than the other books I've read. I also didn't read reviews beforehand, which would have warned me that the book ends abruptly. Can't wait for the next one.

Audible appears to no longer allow me to give star ratings without leaving a review so here's my fifteen and a bit words.

Half a book

I loved this book, as I have with every other of Marissa's books, but would of loved a heads up that its only half a book. I don't mind, but it wasn’t mentioned anywhere in blurb. I didn’t think the book was bought to a good ending point. It felt slow in the last third of the book and then rushed in the last few chapters, where I then was left thinking, what?
I wait in anticipation for the sequel!
