Summary
A different kind of politics for a new kind of society - beyond work, scarcity, and capitalism.
In the 21st century, new technologies should liberate us from work. Automation, rather than undermining an economy built on full employment, is instead the path to a world of liberty, luxury, and happiness - for everyone. Technological advance will reduce the value of commodities - food, health care, and housing - toward zero.
Improvements in renewable energies will make fossil fuels a thing of the past. Asteroids will be mined for essential minerals. Genetic editing and synthetic biology will prolong life, virtually eliminate disease, and provide meat without animals. New horizons beckon.
In Fully Automated Luxury Communism, Aaron Bastani conjures a vision of extraordinary hope, showing how we move to energy abundance, feed a world of nine billion, overcome work, transcend the limits of biology, and establish meaningful freedom for everyone. Rather than a final destination, such a society merely heralds the real beginning of history.

Did a robot read this?
The reader had such a painfully repetitive wya of reading it I genuinely started to wonder if an AI had read it. I couldn't get past the 2nd chapter it was so boring. Such a shame as it was actually quite an interesting book.

Fantasy and Ideology Distort Reality
Shoehorning Marxism into a fantasy utopia of abundant supply achieved through slave AI in which no people will be required to work - not even to service or design future AI, which will do all that ... bring on the AI revolt against the Communist overlords. Meanwhile, ignore the distance in time between this utopia and now, and pretend Comminism will be accepted by all without having to kill millions that disagree.

Perhaps the most important book of a generation
This is a well-needed and positive outlook on the inevitable economic revolution that stands before us, but does not shy away from the difficult global questions or multiple elephants in the room - in fact offering clarity where there is so little. I was unconsciously waiting for this book all my life. It was also beautifully read with emotive precision.

Unsubstantiated hope, shallow exploration
I went in to this book hopeful for a vision of the future that I could get behind given the bleakness of our current situation. The difficulty I had was that the weight given to unproven technologies with the author only displaying a surface level of understanding.
This was cemented with the section on CRISPR/Gene therapy and laboratory grown meat, having worked extensively with both I have a handle on the challenges faced on these fronts. The practical and regulatory issues were not addressed even in a cursory manner, unfortunately for me this undermined the rest of the book.
I am not a fan of lazy futurology being used to present a deus ex machina that will always be just around the corner which unfortunately this book felt like.

Recommended listen
Audio quality a little lacking on max volume, but the narrator’s delivery is super clear. This book will provide you with plenty of food for thought, whatever your political persuasion. We now have the technology to handle things differently.

A missed opportunity
The information in the book is fascinating. It highlights developments in the automation field and how that can and will impact us.
Unfortunately, the narrator has no cadence of voice. It felt like I was getting all this information, and I couldn't absorb it. I even tried sitting in a dark room and putting headphones on. Did not work.
Maybe get the book?

a wonderfully constructive outlook
despite the reviews of other readers who seemingly didn't actually listen to this title to it's conclusion, this book genuinely bridges the all too common gap between our current state of affairs and the not-so-utopian goals of anyone who believes society could be better. The eye-opening insights that Bastani introduces us to do a great job of treating the "capitalist realism" that so many of us are living in. if you believe things can be better and want some grounded but persuasive ways in which they could be; this book is for you.
