Summary
The transition to clean energy is moving far too slowly. Trapped by a century of fossil fuel investments and politicians that struggle to plan beyond the next election, the “Big Grid” that powers our modern world is outdated and in dire need of an upgrade. Freeing Energy offers a new and faster path towards a clean energy future — one that is more reliable, more equitable, and cheaper.
Just like personal computers eclipsed mainframes, millions of solar rooftops and small battery systems are challenging every assumption about our century-old, centralized electric grid. These small-scale “local energy” systems are deeply disruptive because they are based on fast-moving technologies, not fuels. Driven by a new generation of innovators and genuinely competitive markets, smaller systems are faster to build, easier to finance, cleaner to operate, and they create far more jobs than large-scale projects. Bill Nussey takes listeners to mud huts in Africa, an off-grid farm in California, and a rural school in the mountains of Puerto Rico to uncover the underlying patterns of technology and the business model innovations of the local energy revolution. He shares stories and insights from some of the industry’s brightest visionaries and from leaders of the most cutting-edge startups, bringing it all together into an actionable framework to help accelerate this transition.
Freeing Energy is a deeply researched, actionable guide for anyone that cares about the future of energy — from startups, policymakers, investors, and utility leaders to the families and communities that want cleaner, cheaper energy today.

A must read for renewable energy entrepreneurs
This book is a very well researched view of the future of the electric grid and how we have got to where we are now. It really helped to focus my ideas and direction as well as understand more about why the system in place exist.

Haven’t found another book on energy that draws you in like Bill does
Bill tells the story of energy and the future we’re heading toward in a fashion digestible for all.

Non technical
The author seems to have written this book as a framework and reason to go around trying to meet people and get a general idea of the industry. He’s not an industry expert, he’s coming from tech. The book was fine, but if you’re looking for something from an industry expert who understands the ins and outs and has technical know how then this isn’t it.

Derivative
a good collection of solar focused ideas, the study of energy is better assembled with Smil, and Gates' book better encapsulates future tech broadly, but still this is worthwhile.

Made me wish for a longer commute!
Smart, folksy, and comprehensive, Freeing Energy should be everyone's first book about the current energy revolution. In each chapter, you'll be inspired by the stories of entrepreneurs, governments (yes, governments!), and individuals who are creating a future of energy independence, resilience, and sustainability. Whether you aspire to "go solar" in your own home or business, help those in under-developed areas get access to reliable and safe energy, or invest in the "next big thing," listening to Freeing Energy will be worth every minute. The narrator is excellent and the author has laid out a clear, approachable, and logical set of principles that make this a great listen. 6 stars!

Very technical but a great story teller
I’m obsessed with the transition from scarce, expensive fossil fuels to cheap, eventually abundant renewables. The book went over so much information but Bill Nussey is a great storyteller and David Gannon did I great job narrating he book

From Self-Reliance to a Zero Carbon Grid, Local Energy is a Huge Win!
This book is a (refreshing, optimistic, and data backed) wake up call for those hoping for and/or working to build a more resilient, democratized, sustainable energy future.
The food industry analogy in Chapter 7 should act as a warning to anyone who buys power from the “Big Grid”.
