Summary

The seventh daughter of the Sea King, Ekaterina is more than a pampered princess - she's also the family spy. Which makes her the perfect emissary to check out interesting happenings in the neighboring kingdom...and nothing interests her more than Sasha, the seventh son of the king of Belrus. Ekaterina suspects he's far from the fool people think him. But before she can find out what lies beneath his facade, she is kidnapped!

Trapped in a castle at the mercy of a possessive Jinn, Ekaterina knows her chances of being found are slim. Now fortune, a fool, and a paper bird are the only things she can count on - along with her own clever mind and intrepid heart....

A tightly woven tale

I found this difficult to start, maybe that's my fault, but I persevered and enjoyed it more and more as I went on. I didn't know all the background stories but enough of them to recognise classic characters

Very slow start.

What did you love best about Fortune's Fool?

Gabra Zackman's reading is excellent, as always.

If you’ve listened to books by Mercedes Lackey before, how does this one compare?

Of the 500 Kingdoms books, this is my least favorite so far. I am, however, only halfway through. I usually devour them in a few days, but I've been listening to this one off and on for weeks. The beginning doesn't necessarily drag, but you don't get into the meat of the plot until the second half of the book. The first half of the book seems to be completely different from the second half, where the real plot begins. I keep listening to it and then switching to something else because I get absolutely bored. It's also the most sexually explicit of this series so far, which is something to think about when you're listening to it at home with a child wandering around the house!

Which scene was your favorite?

Nothing so far

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. It's been a struggle.

Fun read

Mercedes has another light, fun read based on classic folk tales with her own unique spin from Russia and Sergei

A bit slow

I really like the series so far, but this book was a bit slow at the start and every now and again I found myself thinking of something else. I did enjoy that some of the previous characters played a substantial role in the story

Addicted to this series!

I love these stories, each is very loosely based upon a fairy tale. This one is The Little Mermaid because of a mermaid and a land guy, however that is the only similarity. These books are easy to listen to and have creative plots.

lovely story telling of a delightful twist on clasic tales.
plenty of variety of tone and accent made it easy to know which character was speaking each time she switched

Decent book, great series

This book was not as good as the first two, and at times I found myself zoning out and not bothering to rewind and see what I missed. There was nothing particularly uninteresting about it, but nothing especially gripping either. However, I love the series and the world so much that I fully intend to purchase the next one. Immediately, in fact!

Love Mercedes Lackey!

I have read or listened to the books by Mercedes Lackey for years. Some, we had the books, in paper no less, and then purchased the audiobook. Now I listen to stories I have already (text or audiobook) and still enjoy them. Her plots are interesting and the character development is great. She always has the perfect narrator, this time Gabra Zackman. Definitely recommend this audiobook!

Weakest link in the series; still worth a credit

It's been more than five years since I read this one, the one I loved least in the Five Hundred Kingdoms series. It was more appealing this time around. I didn't care for the opening originally, and still don't, but I like the main characters more. Strong and likeable but not feisty and extremely foolhardy, all a plus, for me. Still, it just doesn't charm me as much as the overall series, which I adore. Very well narrated. The very graphic sex probably wasn't necessary as it didn't improve the book.

Narration Inconsistency

The hero has a Russian name as do his family. His culture is Russian. The food and clothing is Russian. His father has a Russian accent. But the narrator doesn't perform a Russian accent for him. It makes no sense. He just has a generic American accent.
