About this listen

Victoria Coren Mitchell's gripping poker memoir now available for the first time in audio.

In September 2006, Victoria Coren Mitchell won a million dollars on the European Poker Tour. For Richer, for Poorer tells the story of that victory, but also of a 20-year obsession with the game. It is a journey which has taken Victoria from a secret culture of illegal cash games to the high-stakes glamour of Las Vegas and Monte Carlo, and brought with it friendship, laughter, and money, but also loneliness, heartbreak and defeat. With disarming honesty, Victoria lays all of this bare. For Richer, for Poorer also tells the story of the poker revolution. How did this cult card game, populated by a small community of colourful and eccentric players, move from the back streets to the mainstream in a few short years? It is a fascinating story from a trusted insider.

For Richer, for Poorer was published in 2009. This audiobook was recorded in 2023.

I have listened to the Doyle Brunson, Stu Ungar and the tells of a Crossroads gambler narrated by DNegs. Maybe being British, but Victoria’s love of poker and her success makes it a brilliant listen. The best in my opinion. Watching Victoria and husband David Mitchell, on Would I Lie To You. David claimed to move book marks being read by Victoria. When asked by Lee Mack how many books do you read at the same time, Victoria answered 7 to 8. He asked the same question to David, he replied between 6 and 9. This audiobook is Victoria’s win at EPT London and her true love of this game of poker. It inspires me to do and try for better…. Quality listen thank you Victoria 👍

This maybe the best audiobook on poker ever

I soaked this book up like a sponge and wish she had written a dozen more. I lost myself in the places, the people, the players, the poker and the author’s perspicacity and personal pain. What a journey … and so droll

VCM and poker

Brilliantly narrated, fascinating, and endlessly funny right to the final ten seconds - but of course.

Brilliant

I loved this, even though I don't play poker it was a really good listen. It didn't change my life or inspire me to play poker but I 100% enjoyed VCM's passion for her game, her attitude to life, the characters and the insights into another world. Just hope she writes another book.

Refreshing, honest and funny

I’m a huge fan of the author. This is a very engaging, well written (very well read), entertaining story about the love of poker and the life that goes with it. Really enjoyed it - but I expected to.

Exactly as you’d expect

Really interesting for a non poker player, really envied the community of players that Victoria found herself in

Loved it!

Fascinating, witty and intelligent insights into V’s mind, heart and soul. And poker. I felt more love during and after reading it.

Engaging and intuitive writing. V’s observations I found fascinating. And funny.

Victoria has a voice I could listen to easily if she was only describing her favourite white paint but luckily she gives us the back story about her love of poker, a game which I love as well. The story is told well and has enough humour and pathos in equal measure.

Perfectly pitched story

Fascinating to hear Victoria talk about a subject I knew little about and even less of her love of the game.

Brilliant story, brilliantly read. Thank you.

Very well written book and insight to the UK poker scene. The book is very well written and I liked how the London EPT tournament win was covered at the end of each chapter and the poker scene stories in each chapter. I highly recommend listening to this if you have been a fan of poker from the old days!

Brilliant, a must listen for any poker fan!
