Critic reviews

"A blisteringly good standalone thriller." (The Observer, YA Books of the Year)

"A thrill ride." (The Guardian)

"Holly Jackson, the OG of UK YA thriller writers, has written one of her most exciting novels yet. Five Survive, my Book of the Month, is about a group of teens who set off on a trip for spring break; when they find themselves under attack, they must work out who is trying to shoot them—and why. Set over the course of just a few hours, this taut thriller will keep readers hooked." (Charlotte Eyre, The Bookseller)

Not as good as AGGGTM

It was a good book however it will never beat the good girls guid to murder trilogy but still a good read for anyone who likes Holly Jackson’s work.

LOVE IT

I found it really easy to read chapters flowed beautifully and like how it was split up into hours which made it feel more realistic

A MUST LISTEN

After listening to the trilogy of A Good Girls Guide To Murder I had high hopes for Holly Jackson’s new book and boy did it deliver! This is a fast paced, witty novel with circumstances unlike any you have heard of before and you will just be itching to listen to the next chapter. It can definitely be a one sitting kind of listen as you just do not want to put this down. Twist after twist and thoroughly believable and 3 Dimensional characters will leave you captivated. I cannot recommend this book enough, if you want an edge of your seat thriller with mystery and the cutest of romances definitely buy this audiobook now!

I listened until the end but...

I really enjoyed the other books by this author, so I decided to give this a go too. I think this is a YA book that is not one to be enjoyed by adults as well.
The narrator was fine, but the story was quite predictable at times and frustrating to listen to. It felt like it was trying too hard to build suspense all the time. There were a couple of interesting twists, but overall, I found it unsatisfying and drawn out. The reasoning behind the plot was really far-fetched and flimsy and I found myself skipping ahead sometimes to get to the point.

Ok good

Quite slow in places and predictable. Same author as HTGAWM so had high expectations. Still a good story and worth the read!

Solid performance by Holly Jackson, but not up to the level of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder

Think the pacing of the second part of the book was much better than the beginning. This took a very long time to clear its throat, metaphorically speaking.

A good listen!

After listening to AGGGTM by the same author, I couldn’t pass this up. I found the narrators voice a little jarring to begin with, quite harsh tones, but it eventually grew on me and I felt like she portrayed the characters quite well. I did get a little bored at the beginning but then I was hooked and a binged the end because I just needed to know!! A great twist and very entertaining.

If you like twists and turns, you'll love this.

From what I heard, this was a standalone book, and not a part of the trilogy (not having read them yet). So it was recommended to me to give it a go. GOOD LORDY! Holly Jackson has made a brilliant book.

This is a very tense and gripping story about friends, social standing, incredibly toxic masculinity (it is written incredibly well, and you will be satisfied with the outcome of it), and a very juicy mystery.

It is a “who done it” style book, where you will follow one thread and think one thing, then have it turn around, so you won't know who you can trust.

My only gripe, is that the words “walkie-talkie” got way overused, which for me personally, means that it has lost all of its meaning, and now if I find myself ever needing to use one, I will have to think if a new word for it. For now I shall stick with talky-box.

I will say, the end credits of this audiobook is pure gold, which I can only assume was an oversight by the producers.

Fabulous book, dreadful performance

As a massive fan of the A Good Girls Guide to Murder trilogy, I couldn't wait for this book! I even saved it until after Christmas to have something to look forward to. I wish I had read it rather than listened to it.

The book itself is really good, excellent premise and plot. However, the performance of the narrator ruined it for me. There was very little nuance and felt very shouty at times. She also kept emphasising the wrong words in sentences making it sound stilted and it felt like they should have stopped and started again to say the sentence like any normal person would. I know I sound like a terrible bore but it kept happening and got worse, this means you almost stop listening to the book and just waiting for the next trip up. I fully understand and support an American narrator as it was set in the US but perhaps this was an issue? Maybe it was because an American narrator was reading a book by a British author,

I just feel it was a real shame because it ruined the book for me. I'll have to buy a physical copy and read it. I both read and listened to A Good Girls... and found the narrator excellent.
