About this listen

From acclaimed short-fiction star Suzanne Palmer comes an action-packed sci-fi caper that launches a high-stakes space adventure trilogy.

Fergus Ferguson, repo-man, has one job: find the spacecraft Venetia's Sword and steal it back from Arum Gilger, ex-nobleman turned power-hungry trade boss. Finding Gilger in the farthest corner of human-inhabited space, a gas-giant harvesting colony called Cernee, was easy. The hard part will be getting past a field of space mines, hacking into the Sword's compromised AI, and fighting a crew of hostile enemies to take control of the ship.

But when a cable car explosion launches Cernee into a civil war, Fergus finds himself caught in the crosshairs. Repossessing the Sword requires him to side with Gilger's enemies, risk death, and get abducted by aliens. Fergus must learn to set aside his pride - and confront a past he's been running from his whole life - in order to take back the Sword and simultaneously save Cernee from destruction.

Critic reviews

"It has been a long time since I enjoyed an SF novel this much. Finder is a raucous good time! Suzanne Palmer's Fergus Ferguson is charming, imperfect, always in trouble, and a most resourceful rogue. I can't wait for his next adventure. Characterization at its finest. Firecracker dialogue. Suzanne Palmer had me hooked, charmed, and howling with delight by the end of the first act. Finder is a marvelous first novel. Bravo all the way around." (W. Michael Gear, New York Times best-selling author of Outpost)

lacking in originality but tolerable.

the protagonist is one dimensional, the antagonist had no discernable motivation. but pacing was good and voice talent was skilled

Thoroughly enjoyable

Great space romp, lots of action and an interesting plot. Would have loved the main character to have had a good Scottish accent but narration very good overall so it doesn't really matter.

Great story

Great story, I really enjoyed it. I’m not a huge sci-fi fan but after falling in love with Becky Chambers’ books I thought I’d give this a try and it was really entertaining, I’ll be reading or listening to more from this author. My only huge disappointment was the choice of an American as the Scottish central character and narrator. They were a good narrator, but it was a massive let down not to have chosen a Scot - I mean how many sci-fi heros from Scotland do we get and we were denied this one!

Surprisingly good

I never expected to enjoy this so much, but pleasantly surprised to find i did.
Very entertaining story throughout, free of some of the trappings the genre tends to suffer from (needless info dumps etc).
The narration isn’t bad either.
Can’t find flaw with the plot or characters…
At a push I would say the author might have done more foreshadowing of the ‘political leaders’ that come in to play towards the end but even then I’d be unsure if that would improve the story, it may even have had the opposite effect.

I think the story stands well as a one off, but can see why it was developed by further with follow ups.

Easy going listen

Not a challenging book but OK if you are looking for something fairly light. characters are well developed but storyline not a bit too straightforward.

Exciting and great fun

A rollicking space opera with characters you quickly come to care about. So glad there’s more in the series.

Slow pacing and overly detailed

Way too much exposition, detailed description, clunky dialogue and slow pacing spoiled a decent sci fi yarn that could have shone with a more ruthless edit. Performance good, apart from the excruciatingly bad Scottish accent in the latter part of the book!

A rollicking adventure.

A war, mysterious aliens and a repo man on a mission to retrieve a stolen ship. It feels like an old fashioned pulp adventure but with modern sensibilities. Really enjoyed it and the narration was great.

Roll on book 2..

Everything you’d expect in a space adventure story

An enjoyable and undemanding space adventure, with a rugged hero, quirky female sidekick, spaceships, mysterious aliens, oppressive governments, and independence fighters on Mars. Enough story and characterisation to keep me listening to the end, but nothing too deep or heavy - sometimes that’s just what you need.
The narrator had a flat American accent, which didn’t fit with the Scottish main character, and I felt detracted from the story.
