About this listen

I escaped. My name is Flora Dane, and I was kidnapped from a beach on spring break. I spent 472 days with my captor before I was found. I survived. And I've spent the last five years trying to reacquaint myself with the rhythms of my life. But everything is different.

My relationships are fractured. I've had to learn how to protect myself, how to live in this dangerous new world. I'm reckless. I know that there are other predators out there, and I'll do anything to stop them. Now I've killed a man who I suspect may be involved in another girl's disappearance.

Detective D. D. Warren doesn't trust me. She doesn't know whether I am a victim or a vigilante. Sometimes neither do I. But all she needs to know is that I can help. And that I'll put myself in danger again if I need to. Because the only thing that's important is to find her.

The master of misdirection

It's a few years since I've read a Lisa Gardner novel and she's lost none of her skill in pulling the reader in and keeping you guessing with cleverly woven misdirection.
The middle section of the book was perhaps a little long winded but the ending was punchy and worth the wait.
The narration was good and conveyed the drama and differentiated the characters well.

Keeps you guessing!

I wasn't expecting much from this book but thought I'd give it a go. Glad I did! Good story with plenty to keep you guessing and no cheesy let down of an ending (which, let's face it, most good thrillers are let down by a poor, weak ending 😖).
I will be looking for more by this author..Also brilliantly read btw.

Entertaining and interesting

it's note exactly a towering literary work, but it's extremely enjoyable and interesting. The plot moves quickly and is an unusual take on what happens after the FBI burst in, rescue the girl and they all live happy ever after, except that they don't.
it is well written and narrated and I would recommend it, though not to anyone of a squeamish disposition as the scenes of torture are fairly graphic

Quite dark and kept me guessing

Good that I enjoyed listening to. The description of the victims situation really does make you feel as though you are there and suffering with them. Gave me a shudder...in a good way.

Awful narrator, okay-ish story.

Pha - mostly pretty dull and predictable. I wouldn't recommend it or rather I wouldn't recommend paying more than £2-3 on it.
I've listened to another book read by this narrator before and she is so awful. Such a grinding voice where every word grates on you, especially when she is doing dialogue- AGGGGHHHHHHHHH- please, please if you are gonna carry on doing books then please get some lessons hey!!
I think I would give another book by this author a try if it was on offer but I shall definitely never put myself through the ordeal of having to listen to that woman's voice again so no more books read by this narrator for me!
There are so, so many books to choose from that I can afford to be picky I suppose.

Tense and the end is surprising.

I found this book intriguing but the subject matter is heavy and disturbing. It isn't a fun listen but well crafted and the end is consistent with the story but only starts coalescing in the last chapters. I now need to hear something less dark!

Loved this story- gripping and intense...

The performance was great and I enjoyed the tempo and rhythm. It was quite upsetting and gruesome too- but the story keeps you gripped. Really would recommend if you are a fan of the genre.
