About this listen

The third novel in the Lindsay Gordon series.

When Alison Maxwell, a well-known Glaswegian journalist with an irresistible sexual attraction to both sexes, is found murdered the police look no further than the owner of the scarf used to strangle her.

Lindsay Gordon, however, has other ideas. Maxwell was a serial seductress who kept a secret record of her encounters – including one with Lindsay herself. Recalling the threats that followed the end of the relationship, Lindsay knows all too well the feelings of rage, fear and passion that Alison Maxwell could invoke. Soon Lindsay is embroiled in an investigation involving blackmail, stolen government documents and the vested interests of a group of people determined to keep her from finding the truth.

Many reviews have criticised the narrator and she started off very wooden but improved as the story unfolded. Story seemed less important than the lesbian relationships. This wouldn’t have mattered if the plot had been stronger.

Ok but not up to VD’s usual

Not as good as other books by Val it seems to have lost punch. But saying that I still listened to the book.

What on earth has happened to V D once upon a time all her books could be relied on to keep you listening I’m sorry to say in my opinion this is very poor

Only made it as far as chapter 2 - not up to her normal standard

Not the best

Very enjoyable. Good twisty story as always! Look forward to the next one. Very good characters.

Excellent!

I have never found a Val McDermid such a struggle - nothing against the Scots accent - that was lovely but as for all the other attempted accents ... well it ranged from dreadful to sheer laughable!

Ditch this narrator!

I am enjoying the story, once I’ve worked out who all the characters are, too many female names thrown in at the start which causes slight confusion. I’m Scottish and find the Scottish accents tolerable, however, Helen’s Scouse accent is dreadful (cross between poor Liverpool and Irish) almost enough to make me just want to fast forward when she speaks. I will persevere, but disappointed with the narration.

Name Heavy and poor Accents

.. with enough twists and turns. A surprising ending. In fact the whole book was unpredictable. Only spoiled by the narration which is too high pitched for headphones. Have to turn the volume right down

A good plot

Enjoyed this as a light read that didn’t have too many twists and turns to keep up with. Engaging characters and relationships
