Summary

Everything is on the line for probability mage Alex Verus in the 10th urban fantasy novel from the best-selling author of Fated.

Once Alex Verus was a diviner trying to live quietly under the radar. Now he's a member of the Light Council who's found success, friends...and love. But it's come with a price - the council is investigating him, and if they find out the truth, he'll lose everything.

Meanwhile, Alex's old master, Richard Drakh, is waging a war against the council, and he's preparing a move that will bring Alex and the life mage, Anne, under his control. Caught between Richard and the council, Alex's time is running out. To protect those he cares for, Alex will have to become something different. Something darker....

Closing in on the big finale

After the story became a bit repetitive in the last couple of books, it takes a turn and changes pace in the this volume. Finally there is some progress and we get a peak at some of Richard's big plans. Good Performance be Gildart Jackson, who I enjoy as a narrator. It feels as if he had ever so slightly changed his intonation on Arachne though. I'd really love for these books to be translated into a TV series. I struggle with all the different characteristics of Elsewhere and its probably easier to understand in a visual medium.

loved how the story continues

I love how the story continues, but it feels a bit rushed to get Alex to where he needs to be. it maybe smoother if you re-listen to the few previous books to get a more satisfying story pacing.

great book, and it brings the story to a reasonable conclusion, can't wait for the finale

Story is getting better

I really enjoyed this, quite a few errors in the recording which was disappointing but nothing you can’t ignore.

Better than the Dresden files

If you love the Dresden files like me and read every one 10 times, you will like this even better, I thought it wasn’t possible, but wow 😳

What has happened to the narration??

The book is great, the story is fantastic and fast paced. It should be a thoroughly enjoyable listen but the narrator, who started off the series so well, has completely lost his way. Initially there were distinctive voices for each of the main characters, while not in the league of some of the vocal performers I’ve listened to, I could tell one character from another. The lines between characters have become more blurred in recent additions and as many have noted, arakni has turned into a dalek. I could handle all of that, as while it may have hampered may immersion into the story somewhat, it didn’t hamper my ability to follow the story itself. This has unfortunately changed with fallen.

I now find myself getting lost in conversations between certain characters. Anne sounds exactly like Alex, which seems to be the narrator’s normal voice. Chalice somehow developed an Indian accent and now sounds exactly like a less angry Veri. Arakni is worse then ever. It’s as if the narrator has completely forgotten his initial readings. Maybe it’s worse since I’m binging the series one book after the other so the memory of the past incarnations of the characters is fresh and the new ones feel ridiculously off kilter.

If it had been this bad from book one I would have likely never made it this far. May have to finish the series in paperback to save me from trying to follow AnnAlex’s further adventures in butchering a conversation.

Definitely Dark

Well, yes. We were warned, I just didn't realise how far into darkness Benedict Jacka was going to go with this one. Parts I should have known, the hints were there from previous books, I just didn't pick up on the Drakh bit.

Definitely NOT a book to start with, there is too much back story for anyone to understand a lot of the book unless they've listened to (or read) the previous books. It's almost as if characters from every book made an appearance in this one (maybe they did, I lost count).

Beautifully narrated as usual by Gildart Jackson, although some of the voices changed from previous books. I think that's been commented on before regarding previous books.

In some ways this is a rough book to listen to, it takes away so much that Alex has worked for. I'm trying not to give anything away in this review so I won't list anything else. It does, however, leave the reader with a bit of a cliffhanger ending, of which I'm not fond - especially when we have to wait probably a year for the next book.

The writing is powerful, character development for Alex is taken several steps further and, to be honest, it's a bit of a rollercoaster as far as emotions go.

Excellent!

Brilliantly read as always. One of the best Veres stories so far. Absolutely great 👍, I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.
