Summary

Over seven million kids in the US suffer from serious anxiety, and that figure has doubled since the pandemic. But 90 percent of kids treated for anxiety using exposure therapy are now experiencing a better quality of life. Could it be the answer for you and your family? Are you concerned that exposure therapy may be too harsh or cruel?

There are a lot of misconceptions out there when in fact this therapy approach does not have to be scary or worrying at all.

Knowing what to expect and discussing a treatment plan with a trained and experienced exposure therapist is a great option for an anxious child.

Have you tried what you can to help your child and feel like you might be at your wit's end? Sometimes dealing with a child or teen’s fears can be exhausting for the parents too. Does it worry you that their life will be so limited and restricted if you let their fears continue to control them? What kind of future could your children have when they are so scared of things that aren’t, in reality, that dangerous? What does this mean for the rest of their life?

If these are daily concerns of yours, then exposure therapy may just be the bridge between your anxious, stressed child and their happiness—and this guide will help you cross it.

In this supportive and incredibly useful audiobook, you will discover:

  • Why exposure therapy is nothing to fear or worry about, and how it can be an effective method for dealing with fears, phobias, and even PTSD
  • What to expect in each exposure therapy session, and how to find an exposure therapist who is right for you and your child
  • Some of the common reasons why anxiety therapy does not work, and how to avoid these pitfalls
  • Why children get so afraid of everyday, non-threatening things and situations
  • What fears kids have at different ages and stages
  • Just how serious childhood fears are, and how fear affects the brain, body, and your child’s future—it won’t just “go away” by itself

Critic reviews

"As a clinician with clients who are sometimes children, this book...came in handy because the steps are easy to follow and implement during therapy sessions. Seriously, speaking, the most important thing a parent wants to achieve is a peaceful home environment, and that's exactly the results you'll get." (Dr. Darnetha Chester, author, speaker, mental health therapist, and spiritual practitioner)

"The author has done amazing research and provided great tools to help. This book is great for parents, teachers, and other caregivers, really anyone!" (M. Hill, school counselor and school board member)

"As an educator of students with learning needs, I found the information in this book almost invaluable. Well-researched but also written in an easy, flowing narrative style, James has really come into her own here." (Rob Lockett, author of Resurrection)

Much needed resource for parents!

It is heart-wrenching for a parent to witness their children develop anxiety disorders and phobias. This book by Lulu James tackles these issues by introducing us to Exposure therapy. Even though I was not familiar with this approach, I learned, through this book, that it is in fact a well-established and effective treatment for anxiety disorders and phobias, in children and adolescents. This book helps parents by providing an alternative solution to medication and provides tools that help us navigate through these challenging moments. The narration was also superb. Highly recommend!

Learned so much from this

Before listening to this book, I didn't even know what exposure therapy was. However, after listening to it, I have gained a deeper understanding of the subject and feel confident discussing it with a daughter who is concerned about her son's anxiety. The book also offers a range of helpful tools for parents looking to support their children. Its structure is well-organized, and the narration is superb. I highly recommend this book

More than essential these days: a needed resource!

I don't have kids yet, but my siblings do. I will definitely share this book with them! The depth of advice provided for parents in this book is just great. It is scary the statistics of how many children are developing mental health disorders. The world is different every year, and the impact on the new generations is definitely alarming. Difficulty at socializing, feeling happy, and experiencing joy in simple things. The book gives a wide perspective of the ways therapy works. It's a painful process, but it's in order to heal the traumas, fears, and harmful feelings! Perfect piece of work! Easily understandable by the laymen in the subject!

Practical!

The thing I loved best about this book is how it helped me understand the role family plays in a child's anxiety and/or OCD. The stories made it feel so personal, at some point it felt like it was a zoom in on our family and our dynamics. I now get why I need to calm myself first before I attempt to calm my young one. I am really looking forward to using some of the tips I've learnt here.

A real gift for families struggling

Exposure therapy might seem intimidating but it’s also really useful. I’ve gotten great relief from using it so seeing it applied in this way was really cool. Calm Yourself First was such an important lesson, that is the equivalent of put your oxygen mask on first before helping others. That chapter alone will help parents so that they can help their children. This book gives a strong alternative to jumping straight to medication, which is way overused in our society. The PDF was an excellent supplement to the book and I really appreciated that the author took the time to include that.

POWERFUL!

This is a rich and powerful guide. Society today is filled with unique and loveable children who live with the conditions described above. The sad fact is that family and friends, while loving them, often are ignorant of how to better care for and understand these individuals. This leads to frustration, depression, and sometimes a total breakdown in family relationships. Educators too must know the ways to care for and relate to children who live with these conditions as how we relate to them will make or break them for life. This will make a great gift also. Good job!

Calm yourself first

Great audible. Well structured and we learnt lots about exposure therapy and I mean LOTS. Very informative and gave us confidence it could work for our son. We wanted to learn more before embarking on this journey. The chapter about calling Ng yourself first is an eye opener and a must listen. Highly recommended.

Great addition!!!

I liked how the author mentioned that exposure therapy is not a cure to all, and that it should be gradual and in a controlled environment. The examples provided helped us understand why we should not rush the therapy, how to manage the child anxiety, praising and providing a secure environment.

For those who are new to exposure therapy, she explained the science behind fear, to include rational and irrational fears to empower parents to assist children and adolescents when making the decision to incorporate exposure therapy.

With this book, the author just brought more awareness about different types of therapies, which can be immensely helpful to many people affected by these disorders. It will be an immense help to those who may not even know that there is hope at the end of the tunnel. Will recommend!!!
