About this listen

The essential book from online tennis coaching sensation Ian Westermann, founder of EssentialTennis.com

What’s the number one thing stopping you from playing your best tennis?

Ian Westermann, founder of the world’s #1 online tennis instruction portal, Essentialtennis.com, will confidently say it’s an obstacle you probably never thought of: The ball. You might think this sounds ridiculous. The whole point of tennis is to hit the ball over the net and in, so how can the ball be the thing that’s standing in the way? In fact, this is why the ball is such an impediment: your desire to hit a good shot, with the right mix of power and spin, to a specific spot on the court, prevents you from striking the ball the way you should.

In Essential Tennis, listeners—players and coaches, alike—will learn how improving at tennis actually happens and how to easily implement these lessons and integrate them into better play on the court. Players will hit stronger shots, make fewer errors, and beat players who are currently beating them. Coaches will look differently at what it means to provide a student with a holistic learning experience.

Essential Tennis contains technique-based instruction for executing groundstrokes, volleys, and serves, as well as progressions, drills, and mindsets players should incorporate. Westermann illuminates strokes, movement, strategy, and mental toughness—all proven to be successful over 20 years with clients of all ages and skill levels.

Best Online Tennis Coach

Really great to have Ian's knowledge put down in an easy digestible book (with QR codes for video instruction no less!) it's honest and super helpful. Ian thinks of everything and I love the way he teaches. If you haven't come across him before then get the book, watch YouTube, buy the courses, listen to his podcasts. They are all useful in their own way. my tennis has gotten so much better after listening to him (doing the online courses and watching the instructional videos). So much so, I've stopped paying for coaching. Got myself a ball machine instead and follow everything that Ian teaches.
He's the best.

Worth Spending the Time

A really good book that breaks down strokes, play, mental processes and approach that are well worth spending the time going through. If you’ve been playing for a long time it’s always tempting to rush to your weaknesses or specific points of interest. But Ian covers so much in depth here, that there’s a take away in every chapter.
The additional material and links to videos are excellent, giving you the ability to follow along and get a true understanding of what to do.
I actually came away with trying to do less with my game and that has started working straight away. Less about technique and more about approach. And I think that sums up the whole book. There are resources that are far more detailed on specific technique but they are no good if they don’t stick in your mind or you don’t know when to use them. This book provides a more holistic approach that enables to better understand your game all round along with some insights into yourself.

Awesome

I didn’t anticipate enjoying this book quite so much, but I was going on holiday which would involve a lot of downtime, so I needed something to pass the time.
However, this book was awesome and I’ve just finished listening to it with the intention of listening to it again and this time making some notes. Great content, I even enjoyed Ian’s silky voice which surprised me. I recommend you get this book, relax, take sometime out and enjoy! I’m glad I did… thanks Ian
