About this listen

For a critical element of American society, including many of its wealthiest and most powerful, there seems to be no limit today on what "enough" entails.

The excesses are most starkly visible in the continuing crisis in banking and investment, and even in the two enormous government-sponsored (but publicly owned) mortgage lenders, to say nothing of the billion-dollar-plus annual paychecks that top hedge-fund managers draw down and the excessive compensation paid to CEOs, regardless of performance.

Throughout his legendary career, John Bogle, founder of the Vanguard mutual fund group and creator of the first index mutual fund, has helped investors build wealth the right way and led a tireless campaign to restore common sense to the investment world. Along the way, he's seen how destructive an obsession with financial success can be.

Now, with Enough, he puts this dilemma in perspective. Bogle offers his unparalleled insights on money, on the values we should emulate in our business and professional callings, and on what we should consider as the true treasures in our lives. By explaining what "enough" truly is, he demonstrates how close everyone can be to having it.

Not as good as I hoped

I hoped for a bit more practical book, less moralistic, cheesy and self congratulating one. I agree with everything said there, but it could be said in one chapter.

Dull and preachy

As the creator of the first index fund, John C. Bogle's impact on and importance to the world of investing is unquestionable. He is the patron saint of investing for the common man. But that said, as an author he was just not very good.

His prose os dull, preachy, self-congratulatory and just unbearably boring. It's like listening to a religious sermon written by a school boy. I can't shake the feeling that Bogle would have made an even bigger impact if he had utilized humor and wit in his fight against the financial waste of Wall Street, rather than mere morality.

If you want to read something in the spirit of Bogle, but written by someone who actually knows how to write, I recommend "Winning the Loser's Game" by Charles D. Ellis. An excellent treatise on the benefits of index fund investing.

Not too bad at all

A grand little book from a titan of the funds industry. Well worth a listen.
