Summary
This is a second edition of a book previously published by Samhain Publishing.
David Lauriston has been recuperating at Lord Murdo Balfour’s Laverock estate for the last five months. At Laverock, he has regained his health and confidence and has found - with Murdo - more happiness and contentment than he has never known before.
David is all too aware that some day soon he will have to leave Laverock - and Murdo - and return to his legal practice in Edinburgh, just as Murdo will have to return to his life in London. But when David’s mentor, Patrick Chalmers, asks David to return to Edinburgh to visit him on his deathbed, it seems that day has come sooner than either David or Murdo would have wished.
Chalmers begs David to undertake one last piece of business for him: to secure the future of Chalmers’s daughter Elizabeth. But to carry out his old mentor’s wishes, David must travel to London, with Murdo.
No sooner have the two men arrived in the capital than they encounter Murdo’s ruthlessly manipulative father, who reveals a shocking secret that rocks David to his foundations. What’s more, when David discovers Elizabeth is facing far greater danger than even her father feared, he is determined to help her, no matter the cost to his own safety.
As the stakes rise, it is Murdo who must choose what he is prepared to sacrifice to keep David at his side, and ask whether there is any possibility of lasting happiness for men like them.

Superb!
LOVE this series so much and this final book brought the story arc to a deeply heartfelt and satisfying conclusion.
The narrator is wonderful. His narration seems so effortless - his delivery is so smooth. He narrates at just the right pace for me and all of the characters’ voices are unique. I LOVE his reading of Murdo. ❤️ He really has spoilt me for other narrators!

🤗 Outstanding Narration ⚜️ Classy Trilogy
Lovely! This is a thoughtfully plotted and cohesively written trilogy. Murdo had more to do on page and l squealed in joy at his big moment – so perfect!! However, I wished for more showing rather than telling because, seriously, David did not need to discuss the father dying with Ferguson, Murdo, Catherine, Chalmers himself, Elizabeth and a Solicitor?! David’s monologues could have been culled and better editing would have checked the redundant or repetitive information peppering the story. Nonetheless, I am very pleased to have met Murdo + David and very satisfied with their HEA. Overall, I feel the Enlightenment Trilogy is one of the classiest entries in the MM genre.
🎧 Hamish McKinlay has settled into the characters and inhabited every single one, perfectly expressing them. So when David finally has a passionate outburst or Murdo second guesses himself, I knew it was them regardless of their uncharacteristic emotions. Hamish’s ability to evoke a scene was needed to hold my interest during dull dialogue with the likes of Catherine or filler material such as observing a pub landlord rekindle a fire. Mr. McKinlay enjoyed himself this time around and I particularly salute his vocal choice for the ‘obsequious innkeeper’ which was this side of perfect ridiculousness! Listen out for Lennox’s smarmy iteration of ‘Davey’ and run for the hills as I did! Thank you so much, Mr. McKinlay! Bravo!

A Brilliant ending to this trilogy.....
All the stars for this perfect, PERFECT narration of the story by Hamish McKinlay. He is SO expressive, he really gets involved and brings the characters audibly to life....he IS David Lauriston, he IS Lord Murdo Balfour with all of their feelings; their heated anger, their unbridled joy, their passionate desire [chapter 14...phew!!]. He's an actor, but in no way theatrical if that makes any sense...he doesn't detract from the story in favour of his acting abilities; instead of making himself sound good, he applies his talents to the story and WHAT a story it was!! I've upgraded it on my Goodreads bookshelves to my Creme-de-la-Creme shelf..it was that good!! Everything ended just as I wanted it to [other than Patrick Chalmers death of course], lots of puddle of goo moments...and I WILL be listening to this wonderful series again in 2018.

A thoroughly satisfying conclusion to the trilogy!
David Lauriston slowly recovers from his injuries but his sacrifice may not have rescued Elizabeth from danger. Balfour seeks to extricate himself from his father’s machinations. This bookend to the Enlightenment trilogy was extremely engrossing and satisfying. As well as a strong regency period drama with an authentic feel, Joanna Chambers has produced a gratifying romance. Over the books we’ve watched David slowly shed his self-loathing and we’ve watch David & Balfour grow closer together, despite the attitudes and morals of the time. 🎧 Hamish Mckinlay produced an outstanding narration, constantly drawing me into the story.

Wonderful end to the trilogy
This is not the trashy smutfest I expexted. It is such a loved and loving story, beautifully read by the narrator. So much depth to plot and character. Really quite wonderful.

Hand me the matches to burn down this bridge
This tale resorts to more and more shenanigans, misunderstandings and missteps to create drama. David reveals more of his naivety and inability to think through his actions and decisions, sending those involved with him into mortal danger, amazing when he is supposed to be a smart worldly lawyer. He is a suitable match for Lord Murdo who seems equally dumb.
The descriptions of scenery, clothing and interiors are good, but does little to lift the direction the conclusion of this book went. I did not enjoy Book 3 of this series apart from the excellent narration. Based on the other comments, I expected so much more.
UNSATISFACTORY. The best book I have had in a similar genre is Any old Diamonds by KJ Charles, or if you like tales of the old west Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride.
