Summary

This book is about those family secrets that belong not only to us but to our parents, grandparents, and other loved ones, and about the ways these impact our lives - keeping us from living to our full potential, creating gaps between what we want for ourselves and what we are able to have, and haunting us like ghosts.

In the last decade, contemporary psychoanalysis and empirical research have expanded the literature on epigenetics and what is called 'intergenerational transmission of trauma', referring to the way trauma is transmitted from generation to generation and held in our minds and bodies, sometimes in uncanny ways. The people we love and those who raised us live inside us: we experience their emotional pain, we dream their memories, and these things shape our lives in ways that we don't always recognise.

Emotional Inheritance describes the many ways in which we can identify the ghosts of the past that hold us back and interfere with our lives. For it is only by following the traces that those ghosts leave, and identifying the links between our life struggles and the emotional inheritance we carry that we can change our destiny.

An excellent book explaining how trauma affects the following generations

I really enjoyed hearing the different case studies and the insights into how previous trauma can be transmitted

Internal stories beautifully woven.

I enjoyed and learned a lot from this audiobook . I highly recommend it. Galit reads herself and clearly demonstrates the role of parents trauma in ones internal life story.

Very helpful for me

I liked the way it gives different perspectives on emotional subconscious heritage and how we are often unaware
It proves how often when trying to take away suffering from our children we give it to them instead.
Hits me hard both as a child and as an adult
No self loathing from the author that shares her own suffering with honesty which is really refreshing in these not too honest times

Exceptional

This was a fascinating listen. The case studies are so helpful in teaching how our inheritance plays out. In listening, I experienced a resonance that at times seemed beyond words. I have ordered the hardback version, too. The book is a must for all counsellors and therapists.

I wish ..,

… I had learned about emotional inheritance some 25-30 years ago! I have listened with great interest to this audio book. The only thing that bothered me all the way through the book is the way it was read. The voice, the interpretation of the different patients’/clients’ voices made me cringe. It was, however the very interesting analysis of their troubles and/or traumas that kept me listening. I’ve decided that a hard copy of it is a must for me to learn more about myself.

Great content, terrible narrator

This is an excellent book, full of fascinating stories about inherited trauma but I really struggled with the author's reading. She makes pauses in weird places, in the middle of sentences and that made it very hard to concentrate on what she was saying. I wish I had read this instead.
