A thrilling listen
Wow, this is just a great book. You get five thrilling books for the price one and every single one takes your emotions on a roller coaster ride. Each book is narrated by a team of great narrators that helps the mysteries unfold in style and I like the fact that both a male and female is used and there was some good accents.
The recipient;
I loved it even though I suspected who the killer was the author was still clever enough that she got an 'a har' moment out of me. I liked the characters and it did keep me guessing if I was right. The story is told by several of the characters but it worked and wasn't jumpy in the telling.
Sergeant Wade McKinnon is called in to look at a dead body found in a hotel room. As soon as he enters he know this is not going to be an ordinary or easy case because he had all ready caught the killer and watched him die by lethal injection. Battling demons of his past he once again has to catcher what he hopes won't be a prolific serial killer and re visit the worst case of his career. Then another body is found, closer to home this time but with no evidence and the killings exactly the same he starts to wonder if it's a copy cat or did they get the right man in the first place. At the same time Elle is worried her husband is having an affair, late nights at work and smelling perfume on him. When she talks to her sister, she explains that after a brain transplant it is normal for the person to be different and give it time. Elle can't give it up, he is just acting to weird, then she discovers who the transplant came from and being afraid an affair is the least of her worries.
Inspired by murder;
I really enjoyed this book. I think I liked it so much because I couldn't believe the killer could get away with what he did and I had to keep listening to find out how they eventually catch him. The story is told from two perspectives the killer and the detective trying to catch him, which is a clever way of building up the suspense because you hear all the mistakes the killer makes or how he thinks he got away with it and then you hear the detectives side, as they work it out. There is a few mysteries that you don't know the answer to until the end, keeping the story interesting.
Lost for inspiration for the big story that will make him famous as an author, psychiatrist Dr Eric Leroy hits on a new plan to help him with his writers block. Kill his most annoying patient and frame her poor husband for the murder because let's face it he will be doing him a favour. Things for the doctor don't go to plan and he has to improvise but believing he has got away clean he starts to write only to find two detectives at his door questioning him about the dead body of someone else. Detective Blake Stephenson knows the doctor's reaction to the news is wrong and he and his partner dig deeper but as the body count starts to rise the only common ground between all the bodies is the doctor. They just need to find some evidence to prove them right before the next body drops.
The summer nanny;
Wow, I just loved this book. It was full of suspense and really kept me hooked until the end. I just wish it could have been longer.
The characters are like able but it is the plot and suspense that make it so enjoyable as you never know what is going to happen next. It also has plenty of mystery and action.
Bridgette has the ideal summer job working for the perfect couple and there adorable son. That is until the baby monitor clicks on revealing someone in a mask standing over the cot with a knife. Not complying could cost the baby his life but complying could cost Bridgette hers. It is a race to out think a dangerous foe all by herself but is burglary the only thing on the intruders mind?
Viable hostage;
You will become a hostage to this story until the end, it is that good. I didn't want to pause it for a second. I loved this book. I liked the suspense and spent the whole book trying to work out who the killer was. With plenty of clues I kept changing my mind and it is definitely a story you can listen to again. The characters were likeable and had you rooting for the good guys,
When Malorie flighty room mate dumps her at a bar, she knows something is wrong. But Lani has pulled a disappearing act before and no body else is worried, even when she fails to turn up for a big family event. Malorie turns to the one person she know she can always turn to her Uncle Wade. Despite his wife about to give birth the Seattle Homicide sergeant goes to the prescient to file a missing person case. Only to learn Lani isn't the only medical student to have gone missing and both girls had the same secret. A secret that only the killer knows about, that is until a body is found. Malorie tries to carry on with her every day life but everybody she use to call a friend begins to look like a suspect and someone doesn't want her or her Uncle looking to hard for the missing girl.
Fatal Deception;
I really enjoyed this book. The author manages to grab your attention with the first sentence and you have no clue were you are going to end up until it lets you go with the final words. I love the characters, especially Tess one of the main characters as she is tough and determined but at the same time vulnerable and hurting. This makes the character more human and carries the story on from the previous book. The story is told by the two main characters Tess and her husband Blake, as they tackle the same case from different angles. There are a few twists in the story and even though there is not a big suspect pool it does keep you hooked and guessing.
Tess is still grieving over the death of her brother and every day as a homicide cop is a struggle because everything brings back images of his murder. So when she gets an offer to transfer departments she takes it with out discussing with her new husband. Her first assignment is to go in under cover at Everchange, a cult that the police believe are running a sex trafficking ring. Tess had been out on a date with Colton Everett and despite them knowing she is a cop they believe she is the way in to find out what is going on behind closed door. At the same time her husband Blake is investigating a hit and run death. The girl had connections to Everchange. She gave up her modelling career and broke all contact with her sister (her only living relative) to join the group but with high walls and arm guards guarding the mansion it will be difficult to find answers. If only they had a way in......the problem is the hit and run accident wasn't the first death connected to the group and with Tess in side with out any back up she could very well be the next homicide Blake has to investigate.
A great set of stories that won't disappoint.

Five books in one

THE RECIPIENT
My review of The Recipient is against the individual book in Audible, which I got on a different code. Reviews of the other books are below. I would put these against the individual books but I can't see how to do that as I didn't buy them individually.
INSPIRED BY MURDER
This is our second visit to the Emerald City, and the police are on the trail of Dr Eric Leroy who they suspect of killing a number of people. I'm not very good at guessing whodunnit so I like a story like this one, where the viewpoint shifts between the killer and the cops as the cat and mouse game unfolds.
Compared to the first book (The Recipient) the plot here was much more believeable and realistic. The story is fast moving and there are some good moments of tension as the cops come close to collaring the miscreant. Detective Stephenson is developing into an interesting main character for the series.
Patrick Zeller's narration was a pleasure to listen to, and I look forward to the next instalment.
SUMMER NANNY
I've enjoyed the Emerald City thrillers so far - and for book 3 it was slightly odd to come up against a short story in the midst of a series of novels.
I needn't have worried though, the short length fits the story perfectly, and it means there is no filler, just plot and action, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. The tension is palpable as Bridget tries to deal with the intruder, and I didn't work out the reveal before it came.
VIABLE HOSTAGE
Book four of this series, and I'm getting to know Wade, Stephenson, Adams and Richards quite well. What I'm also getting to know quite well is that Audrey J Cole can turn out great page-turning thrillers.
The premise of the story was a very unusual one that I've not read before. I won't reveal it here but it was intriguing and horrifying. It was great to get Lani's point of view as the hostage, as she figures out if and how she might escape, balanced against the police and Malorie piecing together the puzzle it made for a gripping read.
It's worth noting this book does refer back to some events from Book 3, so read that first if you don't want some plot points of book 3 spoiled.
This series has also caused me to add Seattle to my list of places I'd like to visit...
FATAL DECEPTION
This is another high-octane outing for detectives Stephenson and Richards. If you've read Audrey J Cole's previous books you'll know what to expect, and Fatal Deception does not disappoint.
Although the initial premise is a bit weak, in that it seems implausible to me that Tess would be dropped in to a complex and dangerous undercover operation on day 1 in her new job, the story quickly builds momentum and you are drawn into Everchange and its weird ways as Tess tries to get to the bottom of what is going on
I would call it a page-turner but as I was listening to the audiobook that doesn't really work. Speaking of which, great performances as usual from Marciano Catalano and Veronica Pace.
At the time of writing this review, there are no more Emerald City books to read. Hopefully that will be rectified before too long!
