Summary

Set in Castle Rock, Elevation is moving story about a man whose mysterious affliction brings a small town together.

Castle Rock is a small town where word gets around quickly. That's why Scott Carey wants to confide only in his friend Doctor Bob Ellis about his strange condition: he's losing weight, without getting thinner, and the scales register the same when he is in his clothes or out of them, however heavy they are.

Scott also has new neighbours, who have opened a 'fine dining experience' in town, although it's an experience being shunned by the locals; Deidre McComb and her wife, Missy Donaldson, don't exactly fit in with the community's expectations. And now Scott seems trapped in a feud with the couple over their dogs dropping their business on his lawn. Missy may be friendly, but Deidre is cold as ice.

As the town prepares for its annual Thanksgiving 12k run, Scott starts to understand the prejudices his neighbours face, and he tries to help. Unlikely alliances form, and the mystery of Scott's affliction brings out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others.

From master storyteller Stephen King comes this timely, upbeat tale about finding common ground despite deep-rooted differences. Compelling and eerie, Elevation is as gloriously joyful (with a twinge of deep sadness) as It's a Wonderful Life.

Another excellent book!

No one knows a book, and it's intonations, like the author, so Stephen King reading one of his own was a thrill. The usual level of excitement and chills by the score. If you are on a diet it may not be the best one to read, but it's a real bite your knuckles ride into weight loss.

Brilliant story from the Master.

Definitely different, but Stephen King knows how to get your interest and keep you wondering right to the end.
What did I like about the Story?
From the very start , which in its self is quite unusual I tried to fathom out how such a theme could be weaved into a story, but Stephen King is a master story teller and Elevation does not disappoint. In fact it’s a story that operates on several different levels with characters that you will come to understand and admire. I loved both the stories and for fans of Stephen King this will add another dimension to his followers.

Thought provoking and enjoyable to listen to.

Loved it! Stephen Kings narrates it perfectly! A warm and thought provoking novella. My only complaint is that it was too short as I wanted more!

Extremely recommended

This is a short, sweet book (if you're looking for horror this particular title isn't for you) and very enjoyable, the fact that it is narrated by King himself makes it all the more special.

Not his most engaging, but decent

Two pleasant and easy listening stories, they have his usual unique brand and slant and are very good fun. Both quite short and not overly complicated which he can become of course, but enjoyable none the less

Different and short

I don't like SK as narrator. Main characters were lesbian's and non-writer. I liked the second book better (you get 2 in 1)

Thought provoking and poignant

I actually liked this story(stories) a lot more than I thought I would after reading the reviews. But as an king reader/listener I bought this as I do every book. These are essentially social commentary but they are gripping and as the are read by the man himself then that’s cool with me. Btw the other reviewer that said thinner was a James Herbert book it wasn’t it was actually written by Stephen king under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Keep up the good work audible.

Good story. Not well read.

King is a great story writer. I really enjoyed the story. His reading is not dynamic enough to make it enjoyable to listen to. I don't think I could face listening to him reading one of his longer books.

Unusual and pretty good

Stephen King is my favourite author, I have been reading him ever since Carrie was published back in the 70s. I had actually read this novella years ago as part of an anthology but thought I would give it another listen.

There are lots of things about the story that I like and a couple I don’t. SK levering in a dig or two at Trump has become the norm and it does tend to clang when you read it (much as I can’t stand the man and agree with the sentiments). Also the small town attitude towards a same sex couple seems a bit laboured and unbelievable but hey what do I know? Maybe this is how it is in small town Maine - or was a few years back. Likewise one of my pet peeves with any author is when the characters call each or Mr This or Miss That or Ms Whatever and invariably the character turns around and says “Call me Mary” or whatever they are called and the other says “Alright and I’m Scott”. Again, maybe this IS how small town America works but it certainly doesn’t work like that where I live in the U.K. I would feel very weird calling pretty much anyone by anything other than their first name - even if I only just met them. Anyway, other than that I enjoyed this odd little story and I liked the fact that the main character felt “Elevated” rather than depressed by his condition

There is also a short story at the end about a man and his dog. Short and sweet but good nonetheless and worth a listen
