About this listen
The first in an epic fantasy trilogy from Sunday Times bestselling author L.R. Lam.
Long ago, humans betrayed dragons, stealing their magic and banishing them to a dying world. Centuries later, their descendants worship dragons as gods. But the 'gods' remember, and they do not forgive.
Thief Arcady scrapes a living on the streets of Vatra. Desperate, Arcady steals a powerful artifact from the bones of the Plaguebringer, the most hated person in Lumet history. Only Arcady knows the artifact's magic holds the key to a new life among the nobles at court and a chance for revenge.
The spell connects to Everen, the last male dragon foretold to save his kind, dragging him through the Veil. Disguised as a human, Everen soon learns that to regain his true power and form and fulfil his destiny, he only needs to convince one little thief to trust him enough to bond completely - -body, mind, and soul - and then kill them.
Yet the closer the two become, the greater the risk both their worlds will shatter.

A slow burner but worth sticking with it!
Initially I didn't enjoy either the narration or the story and found the jumping between character's viewpoints a bit jarring.
I'm really glad I stuck with it though as it turned into a really interesting story with well thought out character and plot development.
I can't wait for the next one to come out!

Great premise, doesn’t quite deliver
The narrators did a lovely job, but due to the different tenses and POVs used, it made it hard to tell when something was dialogue or monologue at times.
Generally a decent plot but the beginning is slow and parts were difficult to follow. Arcadie’s motivations & long-term goals didn’t feel relevant to her actions, and Everyn’s conflict didn’t feel as impossible as it should have because I didn’t believe their relationship. The premise made the book sound more romance-heavy than it is. I didn’t quite understand the point of the bonus POVs either. The world and magic system was interesting though, and I appreciated the moments exploring gender, and having an NB protagonist.
