Summary

NATIONAL BEST SELLER

December 12th, 2019, Jade returns to the rural lake town of Proofrock the same day as convicted Indigenous serial killer Dark Mill South escapes into town to complete his revenge killings, in this “superb” (Publishers Weekly) sequel to My Heart Is a Chainsaw from New York Times bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones.

Four years after her tumultuous senior year, Jade Daniels is released from prison right before Christmas when her conviction is overturned. But life beyond bars takes a dangerous turn as soon as she returns to Proofrock. Convicted Serial Killer, Dark Mill South, seeking revenge for thirty-eight Dakota men hanged in 1862, escapes from his prison transfer due to a blizzard, just outside of Proofrock, Idaho.

Dark Mill South’s Reunion Tour began on December 12th, 2019, a Thursday.

Thirty-six hours and twenty bodies later, on Friday the 13th, it would be over.

Don’t Fear the Reaper is the “adrenaline-filled” (Library Journal, starred review) sequel to My Heart Is a Chainsaw from New York Times bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones.

A superb sequel

As brilliant and enthralling as it's predecessor, this one continues the winning themes of Chainsaw and ramps up the threat level and kills

Superb, blood-splattered sequel

The follow-up to My Heart is a Chainsaw absolutely nails it, for me. That wonderful mix of supernatural and slasher, the lore and references, the action and creativity, it all lands. And is there anyone who can turn a film into a verb quite like SGJ?

Of course, I couldn’t review this book without mentioning someone in particular: Jade. Fucking. Daniels. As enigmatic as ever, full of wit, heart, and abrasiveness in equal measure, she holds everything together, is the reluctant star of the show. Despite this book being the middle in a trilogy, it feels like she has a full arc, learns more about herself, evolves into something else. Jade Daniels is my final girl.

So, please, go get this book. Read Chainsaw, then read this, then sit impatiently for The Angel of Indian Lake.

amazing sequel

I don't have words. I love it, narrators did great job, it had so many cinematic scenes, hillarious moments and heartbreak. but the ending killed me. not as much as the end of the chainsaw but it still crushed me.

Overall very enjoyable sequel, anticipating part 3

Like one of the other reviewers, I occasionally found this a bit hard to follow. The wider cast and some twists make it a more demanding listen than Chainsaw, and somewhat lacks the laser focus from Jade's perspective in the previous book, but the ending is magnificent. I'm excited for the final part of the trilogy and will definitely be picking it up.

A phenomenal slasher

Returned to the book in preparation for the third entry in the trilogy, coming later this month. I think I still prefer My Heart Is A Chainsaw, but there's not a lot in it. Jade, or Jennifer, shows such growth compared to the first book - the world is still so desperately unfair to her, but she handles it differently. The book is gorier, nastier, and more full-throttle from the start than the previous entry, too.

I did miss Cara Gee's narration from the first book. The cast is good, there's nothing wrong here, but Gee brought Daniels to life in a way I really missed.

A bit hard to follow at times

I found this quite hard to follow, just as I found the ending of Chainsaw. I went back and re-listened to the ending of that to refresh my memory. I enjoyed the beginning of this book, catching up with the old characters, but during the action I was getting very confused with what was going on. I kept having to skip back and re listen to sections. I think I’d have enjoyed this more as a physical book and may have understood what was happening better. I’m not sure why I found it hard to follow as I only ever listen to horrors & thrillers and don’t usually have this issue - I think maybe it’s just the way this author writes action sequences.
