Sound effects ruin this.

Stories and performances are top quality. Marred by intrusive and over loud (painfully so) sound effects.

I have listened to hundreds of audio books in my time and many many Doctor Who audio books. This is the first one I have had to stop listening to because of awful sound effects that drown out the voices. I have a headache from attempting to get through this but I can’t bear it any longer.
I think someone needs to remaster these and turn the sound effects down or off. They should be background and the voices in the foreground not as it is the other way around.

Space for pleasure.

Have to say that I bought this audiobook for the value for money aspect generally and for Space Pirates in particular. And sadly that was the one story that was the biggest disappointment. Not the story itself (it's my favourite Robert Holmes script of the 60's) but for the narration. For me Terry Molloy does not invest any real effort in bringing the characters to life (the Doctor included) and his delivery is somewhat flat etc. My biggest gripe, and this really grated, was his choice to make Milo Clancy into an Irishman instead of the archetypal mid-western cowboy persona so ably created on screen by the late Gordon Gostelow. One story I didn't think that I'd enjoy as much was Four to Doomsday and that is in no small part down to the vocal talents of Matthew Waterhouse. His recreation of Peter Davisons Doctor is almost uncanny. And he invests his talents in giving each character their own individual personality. An excellent listen. Jon Culshaw (Ark in Space) is his usual brilliant self in recreating the voice of Tom Bakers Doctor from the 74-75 season. All in all a great value for money listen. Would have been 5 stars except for Space Pirates narration. Definitely worth a try for fans of classic Who.
