About this listen

Past or future, which path do you choose?

Past, present and future collide as the Thirteenth Doctor meets classic Doctor Who companion Ace, in an epic novel written and read by Sophie Aldred.

Once, a girl called Ace travelled the universe with the Doctor - until, in the wake of a terrible tragedy they parted company. Now, decades on, she is known as Dorothy McShane, the reclusive millionaire philanthropist who heads the global organisation A Charitable Earth.

But Dorothy is being haunted by terrible nightmares in which she’s abducted to an alien world. Nightmares that begin just as scores of young runaways are vanishing from the dark alleyways of London. Could the disappearances be linked to sightings of sinister creatures - part man, part rat - lurking in the city shadows? Why has an alien satellite entered a secret orbit around the Moon? And how has Dorothy become a target for the victors in an interstellar war?

Investigating the satellite with Ryan, Graham and Yaz, the Doctor is thrown together with Ace once more. Together they must unravel a malevolent plot that will cost of thousands of lives. But can the Doctor atone for her past incarnation’s behaviour - and how much must Ace sacrifice to win victory not only for herself, but for the Earth?

Sophie Aldred, who played Ace in the BBC TV serial, reads her own thrilling novel.

Fantastic, well worth the wait!

When I heard my favorite companion was writing this story, I couldn't wait to hear it. Brilliant story linking Classic and new and linking in so much in the one book. A must read/listen for all Classic fans who and new fans too. This brimgs the best of both, and Sophie reads it amazingly! It's just ACE!

Crossing The Generations

I wouldn't consider myself a "hard core" fan but I certainly recognise aspects of the back story from when I used to see Dr Who on the TV. This is my first Dr Who audiobook and it's certainly given me a taste for more.
Sophie's voice acting is brilliant, not only with clear distinction between the characters but even without description we'd recognise the Doctor and gang.
The complimentary music is just about right, not overdone as I've found with other audiobooks.

Best 13th Doctor story yet!

Loved the narration. Sophie absolutely nails the 13/7th Doctor voices.
Great mix of classic and Nu-Who. Writers of the new series please note this is how to do Who!!

A Classic Who voice, a NuWho story.

OK, I'll start by admitting that I'm biased. McCoy/Aldred are my favourite TARDIS pairing. Of course Sophie Aldred would be able to channel the voice of Ace (and I don't just mean the accent!) But the way that she managed to get across the voices of two doctors and three other companions was great.

The story itself is also a great crossover between the two. Melding McCoy's machiavellian planning with Whittaker's teamwork focused approach could have been a recipe for a huge disaster, but she makes it work together. With nods to the past stories (Fenric, the Gallifrey series etc...), acknowledging them as canon in the usual "there is no real canon" Whovian way it's a fun story, well worth grabbing.

Now we just need to put Ace in the TARDIS again...

Thrilling update to Ace's story

A rattling good yarn, excellently read by Sophie Aldred. If you are newish to Who it's great fun - scary, funny, engaging; if you are familiar with Ace and 'her' Doctor there's an extra thrill of seeing how the time Lord has changed.

Wicked take on a classic character

I really enjoyed this audio book, Sophie Aldred must have done so much research in writing it as it is jam-packed with classic references, and they are used to enrich the story but never feel like they are in the way of it. Not all of the voices reflect the way they sound on the show and occasionally it is hard to tell one from another, but that feels more of a nitpick rather than a true problem, overall the delivery is engaging, pleasant and flows well with the story. I've come away from this hoping for a sequel or perhaps a series of audio adventures featuring some of the characters seen here. Well worth listening to
