This is the series that never got filmed

Would you listen to Doctor Who: 10th Doctor Tales again? Why?

These stories are quintessentially David Tennants Doctor, and, when Donna is involved, they are awesome. The dialogue is tight and the action fast paced.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Overall great narration. Catherine Tate is amazing. David Tennant...David Tennant is simply awesome. There are times when he is narrating fast paced multi-character action and dialogue not only in three distinct voices, but three different accents. He switches character and accent seamlessly, without missing a beat. you have to remind yourself he is playing all the characters.

Very enjoyable.

A great compilation of books. I’d bought some separately already unfortunately, but as I enjoyed them so much, I didn’t mind buying again. All are well narrated and excellently written.

The books are all set during the time of Tennants Doctor. Pest Control, The Forever Trap, and The Nemonite Invasion are following the Doctor and Donna. The Rising Night is set just after they part ways, and The Day Of The Troll, The Last Voyage, and Dead Air are all following the Doctor and whomever he meets in the story as he no longer has an assistant.


Pest Control

A great story about the Doctor and Donna. A well written, incredibly funny story by Peter who manages to get quite a few puns in, excellently read by David.

SPOILERS:

The Doctor and Donna land on a planet called Recension, during the second great and bountiful human empire. They soon find they are in the middle of a battlefield.

Humans are fighting the Aquabi - a race of aliens that resemble centaurs. The Aquabi attack and steal a transport which happens to have the Tardis inside. The Doctor decides to chase his beloved vessel and zooms after the transport, leaving Donna behind with the humans.

But all isn’t as it seems. There’s a huge robot on the rampage and something is happening to the humans...

Can Donna keep their cover as Doctor McCoy and Captain Kirk? Can the Doctor discover what’s happening to the humans? And most importantly, can the Doctor lead the opposing sides to join together against their common enemy before it’s too late?


The Forever Trap
Written by Dan Abnett
Read by Catherine Tate

An enjoyable story about the Doctor and Donna. Well written by Dan and excellently read by Catherine.

SPOILERS:

Normally the Tardis blocks spam, this time they managed to get through. As the Tardis shakes Donna accidentally agrees to rent an apartment. The Doctor and Donna find themselves there and the mystery only deepens after that.

The Doctor and Donna begin exploring, and eventually they find a staircase. They head down and on the way get to meet some interesting characters. They find that not only have they been taken but a lot of other people have ended up being kidnapped by this company.

Unfortunately some of the people the company had taken enjoy war a little too much.

Now the Doctor and Donna must battle their way through the levels and find management so that they can escape this new apartment building.


The Nemonite Invasion

Read by Catherine Tate

This story is about the Doctor and Donna. It’s well written and very enjoyable. Catherine Tate is as good as always.

SPOILERS:

The Doctor and Donna crash land in the sea in the 1940s. As they desperately hunt for the Nemonite. A creature which takes over people it looks a bit like a leech.

They’re taken to the naval base and hear about a German submarine which is calling for help. The Doctor insures that he and Donna can go and search it.

They find one survivor aboard the ship and the submarine is seized by the UK Navy in the hopes that they can use all the weapons abroad.

Unfortunately the loan survivor has been taken over by the Nemonite. The creature devours the host being from the inside, and then they spawn creating thousands of them selves.

Now the race is on for the Doctor and Donna to prevent the Nemonite taking over the Navy and the entire human race whilst also making sure that D-Day happens.


The Rising Night
Written by Scott Hancock
Read by Michelle Ryan

This story is set just after the Doctor and Donna part ways.

It’s a great story with a lot of horror overtones in the plot. It’s well written, well read, and very enjoyable.

SPOILERS:

It’s always a great idea to take rocks named the Lucifers Tombstone isn’t it.

In the small village of Thornton Rising, set in the 18th century Yorkshire Dales, there’s a pile of stones called ‘Lucifer’s Tombstone’. Harry Winter goes out to find rocks for his father, to repair a wall around his farm. After a fruitless search he decides to take the stones from Lucifers Tombstone - what’s the harm, really?...

The Doctor has slept, a rarity for him, but he doesn’t know how he got here or even where here is. The townsfolk are wary of him, believing he is the reason for the men of the village being drained, the women disappearing, and their livestock being attacked.

As events unfold the Doctor meets Charity, and then the adventure begins to find whatever has made it possible for this little village to be in a constant state of night, and the reason behind the deaths, disappearances, and attacks.


The Day of the Troll
Written by Simon Messingham
Read by David Tennant

This story is based whilst the Doctor is travelling without an assistant. Great story, well written by Simon and excellently read by David.

SPOILERS:

Don’t go under the bridge!

Katie and Carl find someone tracks in the mud. Carl, ever adventurous, follows them first as Katie finds her torch then follows. But Carl’s gone. There’s no way Katie’s going under the bridge.

Turning she runs away from the bridge and into a man, a smiling man, a man who decides there’s a mystery to solve and who likes nothing more than finding all the answers.

When the Doctor takes Katie back to the mansion he finds that it’s a base for a team of scientists who are trying to grow crops in the barren wasteland. Except this isn’t right. They’re in the south of England - the land should be fertile!

Now there are two mysteries, or maybe just one big mystery. One things for sure - don’t go under the bridge...


The Last Voyage
Written by Dan Abnett
Read by David Tennant

A very good story that makes you think, well written by Dan and amazingly well read by David.

SPOILERS:

This ship is the first of its kind, an Interstitial Transposition Vehicle creates by a man called Joseph Sterns Cluxton.

Not long into the voyage, Sugar MacAuley goes down to the galley to collect an order that hasn’t been filled for her friend. She meets another attendant who is scared, running away from the stores. Sugar carries on getting champagne. When the ship jolts she sees a ball of something spinning. She leaves and runs into the Doctor.

It’s not long before they realise something is very wrong. As they move through the ship they can’t find any of the passengers. Thinking that the problem lies within the engines, the Doctor decides to reboot them. On the way they find people are slowly returning. After gathering the few who return together the Doctor goes to the engine room to figure out what to do next, and try to bring the ship into the dock at Eternity station. Perhaps they will all come back once they land?


Dead Air
Written by James Goss
Read by David Tennant

This is the last book for Tennant’s Doctor. James writing style is quite different to the others in this collection. It takes a little time for my to get into his stories but once I do I’m completely sucked in, desperate to find out what happens next. As always David is amazing.

SPOILERS:

In the swinging sixties pirate radio stations took off, playing the modern pop the BBC wouldn’t. The Doctor lands on a boat, a pirate radio station at sea, continuing his quest for the hush.

He meets Layla and they begin searching the boat, breaking the transmitter so the weapon can’t escape and spread across the world.

The DJs aren’t happy but with a storm rolling in they comply as best they can. As the storm comes in the Doctor and Layla continue their fruitless search in the dark for the invisible, silent killer weapon, and the Doctor tries to keep everyone alive.

Any additional comments?

Technical issue: Part 2 starts as a repeat of half of the first story from Part 1. This makes the whole audiobook shorter than advertised a difficult to listen to.

Great to hear Tate and Tenant performing. Some great stories. One of the better Dr Who books I've listened to.
