About this listen

David Calder, David Tennant and Hamish Clark star in these BBC Radio 4 dramas based on the original TV series.

George Dixon became one of the best-known and most-loved fictional policemen during the course of three decades of BBC TV's Dixon of Dock Green, in which he was played by Jack Warner. In these 12 radio adaptations, he once again upholds the law on the streets of 1950s Dock Green.

David Calder stars as PC George Dixon, with David Tennant and Hamish Clark as PC Andy Dixon. Running time: 6 hours approx.

Enjoyable easy listening in half-hour chunks

This was my first Audible purchase, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Just one minor foible - once again, there are no episode headings, just 'Chapter 1', etc. Not a huge problem, as there are only 12 episodes, and standalone ones at that. It's just a bit lazy (whether BBC or Audible, I don't know which), as it would have taken so little effort to add the episode titles. It was easy enough to visit the BBC Radio 4 website to get the titles, but quite frankly you shouldn't have to do that.

Excellent performance by David Calder as PC Dixon; he seems to have just the right voice for an experienced and old-fashioned PC. David Tennant and Hamish Clark cover the role of Andy Crawford for a series each, but their dulcet Scottish tones don't, for me, quite fit in. but overall, very enjoyable. Could have done with more than 12 episodes.

Almost perfect

Really enjoyed this book. Some good storylines: But why oh why did we have to have David Tennant (good actor though he is) playing Andy? His Scottish accent just does not fit the role.

Anyone who knows Dixon of Dock Green knows Andy was typically a Londoner, not a hint of a Scottish accent. Fo this reason, I do not award five stars as, for me, this spoilt it a little.

a glimpse back in time

I loved this series it was like stepping back in time. to a time when people still had respect for one another. it's well produced with a strong cast especially the first series. I missed David tenant in the second series.

Golden oldie

For the first 10 minutes I was sceptical, but then I rejoiced in this Tardis trip back to my childhood, when TV was very new, b&w, only one channel, limited hours of broadcasting, no ads (commercial TV came later, and we couldn't get a signal for it anyway!)
This made TV common culture for everyone even more than the "pictures" (cinema) had been in the '40s.
It is astonishing now to be reminded that police investigated rather petty crimes, blew whistles to summon backup, had to use telephone boxes, that rent for a house might be £2 a month, that anyone could be bothered counterfeiting florin -two shilling (10p) and half-crown (12.5p) coins and 10 bob (shilling) notes (50p!)
A bank safe could hold the fabulous fortune of £10,000, there was National Service, from which one might desert, scampi and chips could constitute an extravagant meal out, a "wild" dance hall might not serve alcohol and frothy coffee (in transparent cups, though that is not mentioned) is daring!
Dixon, was part of Saturday, as later, Doctor Who and Juke Box Jury.

Perhaps the adults, who'd lived through at least one war, enjoyed stories in which crimes are fairly low-key, are always solved, justice is always done, youngsters are sometimes diverted from a criminal career.
Who could blame them!

The books I listened to immediately before were about the Nuremberg trials, Eichmann's trial, and the civil libel case brought by Holocaust denier David Irving vs Penguin Books & Deborah Lipstadt.

I deserved a respite, reminder of the innocent times between the war and the Bay of Pigs, Cuba, and fear.

Enjoyable radio drama to discover the character by

Nice salt-of-the-earth feel to the dramatisation. I liked the stories and the character of George Dixon. I never watched the series but I guess it would be very nice for nostalgic viewers too.

A blast from the past!

I stumbled across this little gem by accident and have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. The stories have been based on the original tv scripts and are, therefore, true to the era. The quality of the performances (well David Tennant as Andy in the first series says it all!) was excellent throughout and the whole thing was so well done that I found myself searching for more - sadly there are none. A genuine delight, particularly if your memories of tea time on Saturdays at the age of nine or ten, involved Jack Warner's 'Evening all'!
