Summary

An inspiring anthem to the power, promise and challenges of self-control, the second in a series examining the timeless Stoic virtues from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ryan Holiday.

The inscription on the Oracle of Delphi says: 'Nothing in excess.' C.S. Lewis described temperance as going to the 'right length but no further.' Easy to say, hard to practice—and if it was tough in 300 BCE, or in the 1940s, it feels all but impossible today. Yet it's the most empowering and important virtue any of us can learn.

Drawing on ancient Stoic wisdom and examples across history and around the world, Ryan Holiday shows why self-control is so vital, and how to cultivate it in our own lives. Moderation is not about abstinence: it is about creativity, self-respect, focus and balance. Without it, even the most positive traits become vices. But with it, happiness and success are assured: it is the only way to live an extraordinary, fulfilled and effective life.

Interesting stories, not how to be disciplined

Even though this book contains interesting stories and examples of being disciplined. It doesn't cover how to be disciplined. I was personally expecting it to cover how the stoics viewed disciplined which it only covers very briefly.

It is mostly book on short stories telling the struggles of what various sports men, artist and former world leaders went through which might be inspiring, but I personally don't find very insightful.

A personal view of mine others may not share and goes away from the book to a point :

he kept using Queen Elizabeth as an example of being virtuas and disciplined, which if you look deeply into the royal families involvement with let's say questionable people including Jimmy Saville. I'll let you fill in the blanks.

He then criticises JFK and uses negative examples of his character which he was one of the few presidents who's actually ever cared for his people, I know this is going away from the book but I think it's relevant as it shows Ryan's views on virtue and people are actually questionable.

Got me to quit drinking

Now I wasn’t the type of person who drank every night however I would link events with drinking and as these events started to pile up I was drinking heavily every week. The book inspired me to take hold of my destiny and change my life for the better this negative spiral was effecting my health, my business and most importantly my family so I have to thank Ryan for his inspiration.

Taking the actions of the person you want to become now makes all the difference.

PS this is my first review on Audible with a library of 400+ so what does this tell you about how good the book is?

Research

Lost a lot of respect for author when he talks about England winning the war. Very disrespectful to the other soldiers in the British army. Should really have researched better considering the book is on discipline.

Good author but this book was not for me.

Although I like the author I didn't find this book that great as I found that there was too much irrelevant story telling. Obstacle is the way is a great book which I've read and now will give stillness is the key a go.

I absolutely love it.

A while ago I listened to Ryan Holiday's 'Ego is the Enemy' and I was immediately hooked. Besides his books, I am a big fan of The Daily Stoic newsletter and podcast. This book is highly recommended and I enjoy every chapter. I think it's downright brilliant.

Powerful ideas & examples brilliantly written and read

I think this is Ryan’s best work to date. Packed with brilliant insight but concise and focused. I think this single rule, Discipline, is the key to all the four pillars of Stoicism so this book should be the flagship of the series, in my opinion… so far.
Huge gratitude to Ryan for doing the work.

Excellent 2nd series

Good explanation of temperance one of the 4th cardinal virtues of stoicism. the author is able to make a mundane topic to something worth reading. success don't come without discipline. about more and having enough
