Summary

This exclusive edition features an introduction narrated by the author, and an interview between Andrew Morton and celebrated royal correspondent Jennie Bond.

A reissue of this classic title, updated with never-before-published material from the original taped interviews and with a new introduction by Andrew Morton that reflects on the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the original publication of Diana: Her True Story.

One of the world's best-known biographers, Andrew Morton's groundbreaking and controversial biography Diana: Her True Story changed the public's perception of the British monarchy and became an instant global best seller. When it was first published, the original book was met with abuse and criticism from the disbelieving British establishment and mass media. At the time Diana's collaboration with Morton was a closely guarded secret. It was only in 1997, months after her tragic death, that Morton revealed how the princess was the hidden hand behind the most controversial royal book of all time.

In raw and revealing tape recordings, Diana exposed the sham of her marriage to future king Prince Charles, her eating disorders, her suicide attempts as well as her hope and faith in a happier future. This was royalty unplugged and uncensored, the princess talking candidly about her whole life, from her unhappy childhood to her time inside the royal family.

Sadly a life of such promise was cut short in an underpass in Paris. As a result Diana: Her True Story - in Her Own Words remains her one true testament, the nearest we will ever come to her autobiography. This new and revised edition reflects on the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the original publication as well as Diana's long-term legacy, particularly the lives of her two sons, Princes William and Harry.

UPDATED VERSION - SUCH A FANTASTIC READ

Really wonderful listen. Must admit as a true fan of Diana, I did shed many tears.

It brought everything up to date with the references to William's marriage and children. Harry's charity work and help the hero's and Invictus games.

A wonderful, wonderful listen!!!

dreary

got to be one of the most depressing diatribes ever. I have not lost my faith in Diana. Princess of Wales. This can only be a script for the return of spitting image. I sent it back. Narrator belongs in a Waitose lift.

Very good start

I really liked the strategy of this story where Caroline Langrishe was reading the part of Diana, then we have Andrew Morton talking to Jennie Bond which I also enjoyed however then Michael Maloney starts reading the whole story again and this part although the longest part of all I found not so good I didn’t like his voice very pompous and sounded like he had a blocked nose. The story is one we all know by now so there wasn’t really any surprises it it’s good to refresh things and remind us why so many of us loved Diana. Pity about the ending praising Harry and William as I feel William has now been left to carry things on his own and I do wonder how happy Diana would have been with this as she said herself she would never let the Queen down. A good book to listen to and remember days gone by.

Fascinating insight and updated from original

I’m not a big fan of the Royal family for a number of reasons. It seems an outdated and over privileged institution which is egocentric and largely unacccountable. I’ve avoided Morton’s biography as I believed it was further manipulation of public opinion in a personal war between Charles and Diana that was becoming increasingly vitriolic.

I downloaded this as an Audible plus freebie and frankly, it’s a real eye opener. I’ve always found Charles odious and could never understand why women found him attractive. This biography gives amazing insight into the courtship (such as it was) and the sham marriage. His duplicity, coldness and moral high ground knows no bounds and some of the stories made me seethe.

Diana wasn’t perfect, but no one deserved the treatment and lack of compassion he meted out to her. She was naive, obsessive and could also be manipulative, but she was much younger and the mother of two of his children. What really impressed me were the accounts of her warmth and compassion shown to strangers. It was a revelation and a side that the press chose to ignore. It’s reinforced my negative views of the Royals and it was a genuine eye opener. Really enjoyed it.

a little disappointed

As some already said, the book is quite repetitive and paint too much of a picture of Diana as a victim even though she herself made poor choices. It made me not like her anymore. Yes, she did suffer and had a husband who didn't love or support her but she was also an obsessed attention seeker and should have known what she was getting into when married into the Royal family.

Lama

The chapters are not organised well.
Chapter 8 is actually chapter 1.
But overall is really a good book with great narrators.
